battery charging?

Post by stuart sullivan » Tue Nov 09, 2010 12:50 pm

Sort of related,I'm off to my nearest Canadian Tire store after i stop dinking around on this addictive "Freekin" comp to buy a battery charger to move around on my four bikes have one already but two will be better, C-Teck 3.300 multi use is the name and they are highly rated by all accounts, made in Sweden. It's relatively small so could be permanently left under the seat somewhere ,comes with two attachments clip and circular and charges at 3.3 amps the price on sale up here is $55 CDN regular $90 so check it out if you need one, c-teck.com.                                                                                                                                  Stu. battery charging?

Post by stuart sullivan » Tue Nov 09, 2010 11:46 pm

If anyone's interested an Update on the battery charger i purchased C-TecK 3.300 it turns out that the technology is Swedish along with the company but It's produced in China so what else is new just about everything is, It's still a quality  piece of gear and definitely looks like it would be waterproof but is a little bigger than i thought you certainly couldn't leave it  under your seat or anywhere else on the bike but the circle attachment clips could be left on the battery. I was also wrong on the amps that it puts out in the motorcycle mode, not 3.3 amps but 0.8 amps a slow charge which is what you want as someone has already pointed out. It says in the manual that It's fully automatic "IE" it charges at an almost constant currant (0.8A or 3.3A) until maximum voltage(14.4v or 14.7v) is reached then it switches to constant voltage and then the currant supply to the battery is gradually reduced, if the currant drops to 0.4A the charger switches to pulse maintenance. There is also a mode button to select bike, car, gel type battery's and so on,I've put it on my old Jeep truck battery overnight so we'll see how it does, apology's for  boring you to death but when you find something at a good price and if you need one of these i think you should pass on the good news "Yes" and this is one of the neatest little chargers I've seen.                                                                                                                        Stu. battery charging?

Post by stuart sullivan » Wed Nov 10, 2010 12:18 am

well i tried the download it didn't work so i went to the Schumacher site it has wheels on it,how big is that thing, and you use that for charging your bike battery? I wait with bated breath for your reply and what would the price of something like that be.                                                                                                                               Stu. Date: Mon, 8 Nov 2010 15:37:06 -0500 Subject: RE: [DSN_KLR650] Battery charging?   The Odyssey battery is a different creature than any other battery.  It is only similar to an AGM in the fact that it does not require fluid maintenance.   The Odyssey battery is not only made for starting it is also a deep cycle battery and can be deep discharged up to about 1,000 times.   A regular or AGM battery will be toast if you do that a few times or less.  It is true that the KLR sized Odyssey should be charged with at least 6 amp charger.  The Odyssey battery actually likes high amp charging.  The more the better - they claim no limit.  I have a Schumacher 25-12-6A smart charger which was recommended by Odyssey until they marketed  their own  line of chargers which is made by Schumacher and very similar to the one I have.  Anyway when I put my current Odyssey in service I gave it an initial charge at 25 amps and have not needed to charge it since (about three years).  My first Odyssey failed after a few years of constant deep cycle discharges and charging with a 1 amp charger.  Now I know better.  If you do a search you will find the charging info either on the Odyssey site or the site of the parent company Enersys.  You will have to dig around but it is there.  Bottom line the rep is correct.

Unless something is very different with the Odyssey battery, I would say she was wrong. I just   bought a sealed agm battery and it said right on the battery to charge with a 1.2amp charger for 5 to 10 hours and to make sure it didn't get too hot. With a completly sealed battery you really don't want to get them hot when charging. Alan Henderson A13 Iowa

Hey I have always heard, on bike battery never use more then 1.5 -2 amps when charging. On my shadow (vt1100c3) I charged with 10amp. (before I knew) The odyssey battery rep., said To use at least 6 amp and 10 would be better. they are dry cell is that why? or was she WRONG??

adding zerk fittings

Post by spike55_bmw » Thu Nov 11, 2010 6:24 am

That's the conclusion I came around to - completely fill up the cavity with good grease, especially that lower one (keep the water from even getting in there. So, Kawi ought to have this on their service schedule - get that bolt out ASAP, before it corrodes enough to become a PITA; clean; pack as much grease in there as you can. My only concern with a 10 yr schedule would be that these bearings, like steering head bearings see a very limited arc of movement. It still might be good to periodically disassemble and move those rollers around a bunch to expose new and varied surfaces before putting back together with new grease. Don R100, A6F

You only have to lift the rear wheel an inch off the ground. I used similar sized shafts to knock out the shafts. It took me less than an hour. I didn't add zerks because it is so easy to just take out the shafts, clean em up, grease the hell out of them and put em back in. > > I didn't have to touch the foot pegs or the rear brake except I had to unhook the rear brake return spring. > > Plenty of good waterproof grease and filling any cavities with grease makes it good for 10 yrs even with out zerks. > > Jeffrey #3 >
