Hi all,  Maybe someone has had the horn button apart and a look at how robust the contacts in the horn switch are. I would like to wire one Fiam low tone horn in place of the stock one. The stock is marked as 3 A and when installing two Fiams it is recommended to fuse for 10A (as well as use a relay) No current draw noted on the Fiam.

Your best bet is to wire the horn using a relay. The exisiting horn switch will then only use a litlle juice (technical term) to trigger the relay and the horn can draw a lot of juice directly from the battery for full sound. The Blazer horn part number BH101LC from AutoZone fits the KLR and is loud and only about $17. It is rated 5 amps, but doesn't draw that much when honking it. / /

The stock horn is actually very good if you rig a relay; ie. power it correctly. I didn't figure it out until I had already replaced the horn and added my KLR horn to my Jeep horns. Jeffrey #3

I installed a stebel. You use the horn switch, BUT it controls a $4. relay sending power from the battery to the 15amp horn. Thats how most electronic stuff works, a baby switch control the bigger switch (The Relay is the big switch.) VERY easy to do.

I went through a couple of $4 relays before I spent $7 at Eastern Beaver and picked up a Matsushita 20A relay with tab . The $4 Auto-Zone cheapies fell apart mechanically due to the vibration and their indifferent quality made-in-China workmanship.

 

The Matsushita relay has been trouble free for 45K miles of dual sport use. Matsushita is Panasonic. The relay is waterproof, mightily vibration resistant and is made in Japan.

BTW the Eastern Beaver site is both work and family friendly , despite a name that might be misconstrued J
