I agree except that my research shows that ATF is more O ring friendly than WD40 or solvent or kerosene or diesel or mineral spirits and does a good job cleaning my chains. ATF is available at your local auto parts store and the cheaper generic house brand will do fine.
ATF and esp. WD40 are pretty thin but they both keep the chain cleaner. ATF sticks around longer than WD40 and lubes better.
However, since discovering easy to carry ultra-convenient WD40 shooters at the 99Cent Stores, I do carry WD40 on long dirt rides to douche my chain en route.
The new chain lubes claim to do everything superbly(including preventing the sandpaper effect) and I do use them after cleaning with WD40 or ATF but only after the WD40 or ATF seems to have dissipated.
