pictures of my 2008 hub problem
I have taken pictures of my 2008 front hub and and Speedo Sending unit. Also pried the Receiver-Speedometer out of the unit with a screwdriver. It was jammed on the gear when every thing stopped working correctly.

For a part that has been riding around inside the sending unit for 43k miles it is remarkably unmarked except for the inner tabs. They are pretty badly notched from where they mate with the Gear Screw 24T inside the sending unit.
Sorry the pictures of such poor quality taken with my Cellphone and a photographer I am not.
I think that the Sending unit froze for some reason. Once it did it cracked off the rings it fits inside on the front hub. These are all original parts. There are no scuffs or real marks on anything to indicate previous damage to the receiver or from what I remember the pieces that broke off the front hub.
The shiny area just outside the bearing is where the snap ring used to be for bearing retention(interestingly enough there is no snap ring on the left side, never noticed before). The black area at about 2 o'clock was where one of the notches for the receiver. Other one at 8 does not show very well due to light and my inability. Apologies.
Pretty conclusive IMO that making sure the speedo sending unit can destroy the front hub if it locks up for any reason on 2008 KLRS. Older KLRS had a much flimsier Receiver design and it would fail first. Good thing is that never had the slightest issue with proper mounting the thing basically put itself together. So like everything else its all about trade offs. I will be taking the front wheel off and greasing the speedometer sending unit much more often now(takes about 5 minutes because I have added a center stand). Whether this was a freak occurrence or not is a good question I can't even get the dang gears out of the sending unit to look at them. If I do and can figure out more accurately I will post it.

Hope this helps to inform.

A common problem in 08's was a lack of lubricant in the speedo drive. The drive would develope a squeak. Mine did after 2000 miles and the drive had virtually no grease in it. A re-pack solved the problem and no damage was done. Larry.> > I have taken pictures of my 2008 front hub and and Speedo Sending unit. Similarly- While the speedo cable is still removed from the hub, I look into the female receiver and see the engagement pawl move when the wheel turns. Just a 1/4 turn of the wheel and you will know it is working correctly. revmaaatin.> > The way I confirm that my speedo tabs are properly engaged when I'm installing the front wheel, is to turn the wheel while looking at the odometer till I confirm that it's increasing, and THEN I torque the axle. > Ed >

pictures of my 2008 hub problem
My nephew took some pictures for me and I uploaded them yesterday thought I had sent a note to let people know. They are much larger file size.
I have owned the bike since the ODO read 00000.3. First real problem with the bike. So not really complaining about it just a thing to be aware of. Looked in my manual and it is not something I blew off greasing other than when changing the tire(only the fourth front change this time). Unless it is in there and I missed it.
