08 klr650 fire!

Post by edlee1969 » Wed Sep 01, 2010 4:19 pm

Hello All, I have just uploaded photos for the group in a photo file called "08 KLR650 Fire!" A friend in town with a 2nd Gen KLR650 went in last year to get the electrical wiring recall done at a local Kawasaki shop. There were no issues according to the dealer and they didn't replace the wiring harness so the bike was returned to my friend with a clean bill of health and he rode it as his primary transportation. The bike was purchased from the original owner with less than 600 miles on the odometer and now shows almost 19,000 miles. Last week, at around 2am, my friend heard the bike turning over. He jumped out of bed thinking someone was trying to steal his bike, though he lives out in a rural part of AZ, so he called the police. The starter stopped cranking but the bike wasn't running so he was afraid who might still be out there. After a while he heard the starter turning again and this time peeked out the window... to see flames shooting out from under the tank! Luckily he was able to put it out with water by the time the cops showed up. He then disconnected the battery cable. The file in the photos section shows the extent of the damage from the fire. The repair shop mechanic (not dealer) said it didn't look like a fuel fire. Probably an electrical fire. Because I own the 1st Gen KLR, before going to see his bike I looked online and saw the excellent Youtube video on the wiring harness recall: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1dJQczy9-88 As you can see from the photos, I did NOT find any evidence of cable armoring, or pieces of melted cable armor on any part of his wiring harness, not in the front of the bike near the radiator, nor under the tank, nor back toward the battery. Right before the fire, he said the lights burned out so he replaced the bulb to no effect. He then saw that both 15A fuses under the seat had burned out. He left it as is and went to bed... awoke at 2am to find his bike on fire. If anyone else has experienced something like this or know of someone who has, please share info as we are trying to get information on how to proceed. What do you suspect happened? Parts and repair from the local shop estimated to be $1000 to get it running again. SUCKS! Thanks Guys!

Attachments : Sounds like a visit to http://www-odi.nhtsa.dot.gov/ to make a report, and with it being a 2008, it should still be under warranty. Call Kawasaki USA headquarters, and pester them too. Throw in that it could have burnt down a house. This shouldn't cost a dime to fix. -- Darren Clark http://www.flickr.com/photos/84373829@N00/ 2004 KLR-650 Fowlerville, MI edlee1969 wrote:

Wow, first I heard of this problem. First, the early 08 oil problem, then this.

I know, I know - so what...? 43 years ago today I took my oath and joined the RCAF. God Bless any that are serving Canada and the US, and our allies! Cheers, Ed
