You'd have to be from New York to want to do that "A", i guess he answered the question nobody asked, must have had a lot of time on his hands but you do have to admire his vision or not.                                                                                           Stu. quality time

Post by transalp 1 » Mon Aug 30, 2010 12:26 am

When I bought my new 09' last year, I did a more "traditional" 600 mile service - with a KLR twist. It got a valve lash inspection, new oil & filter + a doohickey upgrade and a Thermo-Bob. Now, I know the manual for the newer bikes says the 1st valve inspection is at 15,000 miles. (Can't say for the older models) Personally, I'm glad I didn't wait that long. I had a couple of valves on the tight side. I can't remember which because the notes are at the shop.  I changed shims and adjusted stuff on the loose side then vowed to check them again at about 7,500 miles to see where they were headed. It's been too hot here in west-central Ga. until tonight. I finished about 45 minutes ago. In an hour and a half, I pulled the seat, plastics, fuel tank and valve cover - checked the valves, cleaned everything and put it all back together. I'm happy to report the intakes are right in the middle of the specs and the exhausts are at the loose end of the range {tapping ain't burning and exhausts tend to tighten up}.  So, I smiled and put it all back together w/o changing a thing. You'd think I would have done this a week or so ago when I had most of that crap off just to change the spark plug. But, nooooo. ;-) What can I say? More quality time with my bike is a good thing, right? lol   Before I started unbolting the valve cover, I cleaned everything above it so no stray grit, bugs, small animals or the like could fall into the opened engine. No matter how well I think I wash a bike, I am still amazed at the little flecks of dried mud that get hidden way up under stuff. I also made a $0.50 "tool" to take out the plastic plug over the crankshaft bolt. Literally, I took a pair of quarters clamped in some pliers and wedged them in the slot in the cap and it spun right out. I actually got the timing mark plug out with 1 quarter and my fingers.   I didn't take the rad. fan off like the older instructions call for. I just undid the single bolt holding the radiator to the frame and let it ease forward. I couldn't figure out why it wanted to stay put initially. Then I remembered the zip tie holding the Thermo-Bob housing off the fan. I cut it and things were dandy. Aside from the plastics and tank, all that got removed to make way for the valve cover coming out was the spark plug lead, temp. sensor wire beside it and the emissions pipe. I just unbolted it's two hold downs and pulled the rubber hose free from the valve assembly. The wiring harness on the left side of the main frame tube and the upper raditor hose got pushed up/aside a little to make room, then cover came pretty much right out.   Need to get a micrometer and a set of shims for next time - just in case. Until then, I'm going to just ride, ride ride.  G'night everyone.     eddie
