tail light question

KLR A15 (2001) Brake light does not work, upon checking the filament is broken. Question: I used a circuit tester and touched both rear light receptacle "tits" with the red lead (one after the other) while grounding the black lead to the side of the receptacle-> no current from either receptacle "tit". Yet if I put another bulb in, the rear running light comes on. Still no brake light (not the proper bulb). where does the rear light ground?? the side of the receptacle or ?? Brian

Brian, What kind of circuit tester did you use?  If it was the kind with its own battery,then that is a continuity tester.  This kind of tester would not be the sort to use to check for voltage present in the tail light socket.  It should light its bulb if you checked the side of the tail light socket while the other end of the tester was connected to ground.  That's because the tail light bulb grounds to the side of the socket. Now if the tester was the kind that does not have a battery, it should light up when connected as you described checking the two pins in the socket.  Of course that's assuming the bike's key is switched on and the brakes are actuated (for the brake light circuit). ...unless it's a mag wheel with a factory paint dot somewhere along the rim. I learned that the hard way with a Honda PC800. It had these little white-ish dots of paint on each rim. Thinking they were some manufacturing inspection mark, I worked and worked and worked to remove them when I bought the bike. Come tire change time, my mechanic asked me what happened to them? before telling me what they were for - they were where the factory lined-up the tire dots to the heaviest part of the rim. Oops. We found the heavy spots on the bare rims and aligned the tire dots there. The back used little weight and the front zeroed with no weight at all (Metzeler ME800) -other eddie

In the "OLD" days, we were told to install with the paint dot adjacent to the valve stem. Ed

As I recall, Current is a function of Volts and Resistance. Without the Resistance of the tail/brake light, it doesn't matter how much Voltage you have. You will have no Current. Make sure you have your VOM on the DC Volts setting. Check for Volts, not Current (Amps). Obvious for some. Not so much for others. If you have no Volts, start back tracking. Could be a bad switch.
