nklr would you do this?
I have a busines trip I must take in October of this year. I must be there
on the 11th and I will be done by 12 noon on the 15th. I would leave Fort
Worth, TX on Friday the 8th. I would try and make the first 800 + miles on
Friday so I could take it easy the last two days. Here is the dilema, I am
going to Salt Lake City, Utah. My big fear is snow and ice going over the
mountains. I have never riden more than 500 miles in one day and I have never
made a trip this far. I have heated grips and a heated vest, plus other good
cold weather gear. I have riden over 100 miles in 26 degree weather and rode
back in 30 degrees and I will not tell you I was hot, but it is do able and I
would do it again if the conditions are good. I have enough vacation saved up
for the return trip to go south if the weather turns and come back through
California, Arizonia, and New Mexico, El Paso, etc....So, anyone/everyone what
do you think?
P.S.
I am planning on taking the Amarillo/ New Mexico route. Maybe if time permits
stopping in Moab. Depends on first day's miles.

I wouldn't dream of trying to predict the weather in areas that I have only visited once or twice, but if you do the trip, you'll have some bragging rights.
Good Luck,

I would. But then again, I rode from VT to CA at the end of Nov 2007 just so I could to the LA-B-2-V ride. Fortunately for me I f%$^@# up my foot 100 miles into the desert and had to delay the return trip to Vermont until mid December. And I got stuck in ice storms in Oklahoma, riding through slush and nastiness from Tennessee to Vermont, and generally putting the ADVENTURE in adventure riding.
Just do it. You will prevail regardless of the weather and time constraints.

Since your going to Amarillo , avoid New Mexico and take 287 up through the Pan handle of Oklahoma and straight to Interstate 70 via Colorado . Take 70 straight to Moab , then highway 6 north to Salt Lake , or stay on 70 and take go to Interstate 15 north. (much longer) Driven to Salt Lake and Elkhart Tx from Colorado Springs . Good roads no high passes from texas and just Eisenhower tunnel in Colorado . Your route seems to be Interstate 40 to 25 to 70 to 15… I think you will like 287 to 70 to 6… shorter Ken Colorado Trees aren’t changing yet. Should be a nice trip. I would encourage you to do at least one Iron Butt while the weather is still warm. This will get you ready for your trip. Mike H.

The first snow of the year hits the mountains above Moab and the higher country in Southern Colorado around late September, but it should be high, like 8000 feet or higher. It's usually pretty light that time of year, so it will clear fast, and (again, usually :>) a couple weeks between storms until after Thanksgiving. Just pick two routes, the one you want if weather is good, and a lower one if it isn't. Further south, October is the best time of year in Arizona, clear and sunny most every day but not too hot.
I'd go. If you aren't used to long rides, don't committ fully to an 800 mile day. Anything over 500 will really wear you down.

Ed if you take I-40 to Albuquerque then ride to Farmington, Shiprock, Cortez and on to Monticello, the only real areas to worry about usually are around Clines Corner NM and maybe Monticello UT unless it is a freak storm. September / October can be really nice weather but I have been snowed on riding from Moab to Monticello in early June. You always have to watch the weather anytime above 6,000 to 7,000 ft. out west. I had to leave Jackson Hole hurridly one June morning as snow of 6 inches was forecast later that day.

Each year my wife and I drive to PHX via I-15 through SLC. We cross the border into MT on 15th Oct, so we end up driving the UT I-15 passes on the 15th and 16th. So far, weather has NEVER been a problem.
Good luck.
Cheers,
Ed

Tumo would ride in any weather on any day of the year. He's an example of the "Most Extreme". When he was riding through PA in December 2007, it was snowing so hard that I was reluctant to even be out driving anything that wasn't 4 wheel drive.

klr tech day in san diego saturday 21 august 8am
Hi All,
For those who do not follow all the other KLR forums, Eagle Mike is having a Tech Day Saturday 21 August 8am at his shop in San Diego 8am at "2222 Commercial St
San Diego, CA 92113". All welcome. Going to be a big crowd I hear rumored (30-40 bikes/riders).
Bring a sense of humor, tools, spare parts, not so spare parts, your trip stories and a helping attitude.
Thick bbq'd tuna steaks caught locally, just right out of the San Diego harbor, are rumored to be on the lunch menu, plus the regular bbq stuff.
