The dealer may not want to honor the warranty, but legally they must UNLESS they can PROVE in a court of law that changing the doohickey caused the problem. Since the aftermarket doohickeys are of better quality than any other item on the bike as it comes from the factory, the only genuine concern is whether Charlene is a good enough mechanic to successfully follow the instructions. (I believe Eagle Mike has never seen or heard of a failure of his springs or levers.) So, to Charlene's original question: You can buy the parts and have a dealer you trust do the work, or you can wait until there's a tech day near you and you can participate in changing the doohickey with some experienced do-it-yourselfers. Most of us have a hard time trusting the mechanics at our local dealers, so it is more common to go to a tech day. I've had one in the past and may have another in a month or two. Let me know if you (Charlene) would be interested and I'll email you when a date gets firmed up. -- Blake Sobiloff http://sobiloff.typepad.com/> San Jose, CA (USA)> IF you do it yourself and something happens to the > engine....they will not want to warrenty it cause you went in the > engine yourself.

doohickey
hi, i just bought an 87 KLR, I used to have an 86
model, the spring from the balnacer chain tensioner
broke, and the chain being loose wore down all the
sprokets, that was the end of that, too expensive to
fix. When I got another KLR at a very good price (kept
the old one for pieces) the first thing I checked was
that, sure enough there was a sound at the lower part
of the engine, the sound of a loose chain. I followed
Elden's procedure to adjust the tensioner but when I
started the bike again the sound was the same. I
removed the stator assembly cover. I don't have the
tools to remove the rotor but I could see the
doohickey, it didn't seem broke, I loosened the bolt
that holds it and I could move the doohickey cleanly
from side to side with no effort at all, there was no
resistance al all, as if it wasn't connected to a
spring. That's why loosening and tightening the bolt
earlier had caused no effect. My question is, what
now? Obviously I should order the ugraded kit at
Arrowhead, but I see many options..

 1. what does the "complete upgrade" include?
 2. what are the "tools" it includes?
 3. sepratedly there is also an "upgrade kit for pre 96
models" which only includes the bolt and o rings, do I
need to order this as well as the doohickey upgrade
 (my bike's a 87)?
 4. Can I adjust the tension of the chain by hand and
keep riding until the pieces arrive? the thing is I
get no resistance whatsover, I could move the lever al
the way clockwise to its limit, does this mean the
chain is streched and needs replacement?

 Thanks for the help

Any idea where I can get one?
Someplace that has them in stock ready to ship would be great.
Arrowhead Motorsports has been jerking me around for 2 weeks and they still
 don't have them!!!

You're not the first person to mention that Arrowhead is usually top notch.
Let me start by saying it's my friend that's been dealing with them.
He's handling the wrenching (he's a mechanic) and I'm handling the research
(I sit in front of a PC a good portion of my day).
He's getting the "It'll be here tomorrow and I'll get it shipped right out."
 speech.
I'll see if I can get Fred on the phone and give him the chance to work it
 out.
I didn't mean to cause any ill will.

Cat (or should I say Mr. Fish, not having been properly introduced )--
Doesn't sound like Fred, he's usually real prompt and knows what he has
and what he doesn't. Are you calling or emailing?

Mike at Eagle sent one right out to me (doo, two different springs,
instructions). Total turn-around time (call to receiving) was one week.

They've all been out of them a little while. I'm starting to ship today. Sorry for the delay. I've had 2 machines down. Fred at Arrowhead won't jerk you around intentionally. I don't think he's been out of them for 2 weeks. If one of the parts you (general) ordered is out of sotck, many vendors will hold the order to save shipping $$. all the best, Mike> don't have them!!! > > Catfish > http://stores.ebay.com/FarkleMasters > www.FarkleMasters.com > IBA #12835 > AMA Lifer 462122 >
