doohickey
Sorry Chief, no sound from this end. No vibration .... nada. I was very
surprised a couple of years ago to to find mine broken (at the annual
CMC Fun Fest in Moab). It was missing about a 3 / 8 inch chunk on the
top where it wraps around the shaft. I looked high, I looked low, I
even got high but I never found that chunk. Like a bad girl friend I
 hope it disappeared.

So if you are reasonably paranoid, I would have a look see and upgrade
 it.

I am fanatically paranoid. Someone mumbled something about the spring
not having enough tension on it 10,000 miles ago ............... so I
am about to check it again maybe and put the shorter spring on.

I guess that depends on how many pieces it's in, and what you drop it onto.
On my steel bench it sounds like three 8mm 1/4" drive sockets being dropped
 at once!

Hm, darn, mine is starting to sound more like a jackhammer, not
 extreme, but definitely louder.
Another question, to you or to anybody: if I decide to bring the bike
to the shop to have it replaced, I just need the lever and a spring,
right? Anything else I should consider?
I checked out Arrowhead, and their site
 http://www.angelfire.com/ut/moab/klr_engine.html
lists a whole bunch of spring sizes, and I ain't sure which size to
 get.
 Any pointers?
 Thanks a bunch!

The lever kit comes with 2 springs, a 38mm, and a 34mm, which covers more than 95% of all KLR's. All the best, Mike Eagle Mfg & Eng since 1990 San Diego, Ca.> Hm, darn, mine is starting to sound more like a jackhammer, not > extreme, but definitely louder. > Another question, to you or to anybody: if I decide to bring the bike > to the shop to have it replaced, I just need the lever and a spring, > right? P.S. Sorry - you should also replace the rotor bolt while you are iin there. It gets 130 ft lbs of torque - which is a bunch. Kawasaki recommends replacing it. doohickey
Hello Folks,

I have a 2005 KLR 650 that has almost 1000 miles on it. What do you
think is a good time to change the doohickey on a new bike? Wonder if
I should wait till it is out of warranty or change it now. If I have
the shop do the upgrade, what is the approximate cost.

Thanks Rick, (ride a Goldwing also but have as much fun on the KLR)

Change it when it is convenient to you. Gon't worry about it too much, but order the parts, and when a tech day comes up at a convenient time and place, go ahead and get it done.> Hello Folks, > > I have a 2005 KLR 650 that has almost 1000 miles on it. I agree with Jud, Wait until next winter or whenever it suits your
schedule and do it then. I wouldn't rely on the warranty as a 'fix'
though since if it does break down you might be far from home on a trip
where the inconvience will be a bigger problem. You can do the entire
job yourself in 2 to 3 hrs, and then you'll never again have to give it
 a second thought.
