I don't think any specific brand is more popular than any other here. I've use just about every one available (Vesrah, Fram, Hi-Flo, Emgo, OEM, etc...) with no problems and I have racked up a lot of KLR miles. Basically, I was stating that it doesn't really matter, as with the oil debate.

I think you are mixing up the automotive FRAM filters with the Motorcycle (KLR) filters. I agree that the automotive FRAMS (@$2.99) are worthless P.O.S, but I never seen anything wrong with the KLR filters when I changed them. It possible that FRAM doesn't even make the KLR filters and they are made by someone else

Mostly I have spent little time worrying about what brand of oil filter to use. I just bought whatever was available where I was shopping, and I'm still not convinced it makes much difference. But, I also ride a Bandit 1200 and on one of the Bandit bulletin boards a few months back, there was a posting of a lengthy research done on various brands of filters. Some were said to be better than others and some were declared unfit for use. While shopping the internet for oil filters for the KLR, I couldn't find the one I was looking for so thought I'd check and see if there was a preferred one among this group. Have any of you tried the stainless steel one that can be cleaned up and reused with each oil change? Sorry, Mark, about the tart remark, but I thought it kind of funny when my scretary used it on me and being a bit of smart ass myself, I have found the remark handy at time over the years. I respectfully have to disagree with that statement. My last 5 Chevy pickups have had a combined mileage of over 1,000,000 miles and never had a valve cover or oil pan off of them. I only used Fram filters and Valvoline oil in them. Possibly an indication of how well Chevy makes a truck or that Fram filters aren't all that bad. That being said I use Emgo in the KLR. Ken

Emgo filters seem fine to me, look about the same construction as the Fram filters, but I can get the Emgo's for less than $2 each when I order them at work through a wholesaler, they come with no O-ring but no big deal for me, at least until the O-ring on the cover gives up the ghost. Cheap filters with cheap Walmart Super-Tech oil and I can change my oil for about $7.00 with oil left over to add if needed before next change. Dooden A15 Green Ape

That's what I did a long time ago. But....do remember to get a bunch of extra grommets. They get hard and them they don't seal and then the oil bypasses the filter. I now change them out every oil change; I believe you can get away with every other. Bogdan

IMO you are both right. Fram are probably not a problem for motorcycles and millions are used in cages every year with no problems. It would be stilly to worry about using them, no question. Having said that, I avoid them like the plague having seen several problems with cages over the years starting with a Ford V8 which took out the bottom end in the 1960's. As memory serves the main issue has been bypass valves falling out but there could have been others. We saw a number on bus applications which burst the shell on cold weather start-up. If a Transylvanian Toad Pointer bites me I will be likely to think the worst of other dogs of this type and feel the same about Fram. IMO it is a comfort thing. Firestone tires, Dominion/CIL ammunition, Fram filters and others have made me cautious so I simply feel better using other brands which have not come to my attention. Statistically they are likely better than some brands I'm more comfortable with but I don't know that and so my bias rules. FWIW Norm
