I have a 2007 KLR650 which starts only intermittently. Over the passt month, it has gotten worse. The battery is fine. Turning the key to start turns everything on. Hitting the starter, nothing happens. Is this a bad starter switch?
Thanks

Have you bypassed the clutch and sidestand safety switches? Could be one of them starting to go bad. You can check the starter solenoid by laying a screwdriver across the terminals. If the starter spins, then your problem is somewhere between the starter switch and the solenoid. If it doesn't spin, the solenoid could be the culprit, though they don't fail often.

When things are going wrong intermittently it's hard to rule anything out without as much information as possible. If the switches have been bypassed, it's possible that one of the jumpers used is starting to come apart. If not, then there is the possibility that the neutral sensor wire has an intermittent short somewhere that will prevent the bike from starting with the kickstand down, but once it is up, the bike will continue to run. Then another possibility is that the connector behind the fairing that comes from the starter switch to the bike's harness is coming loose and sometimes makes contact and other times not (I've had this happen). It could be that some dirt or moisture has gotten into the starter switch itself, preventing contact. It's fairly easy to take apart and clean.
Just because the lights come on, doesn't mean the battery has enough juice to spin the starter. Do the lights dim at all when you hit the starter? Hear any clicking noises?

p.s. Try the screwdriver across the solenoid test first (make sure it has a plastic or rubber handle). Do it with the key on, and the bike should start. You will get some sparks Then we can work backwards from there. If that works, pull the fairing and the black cover over the wire harness connectors and pull all of them apart, apply dielectric grease, and reconnect.

You say your battery is fine. Look at your headlight as you hit the starter. IF it dims right down then it's your battery at fault.

second set of wheels

Gilbert, I have a second set of wheels equipped with D607's 130/80 x 17 that 'appear' to be narrower than the K270 5.1. I have noticed that the Kenda tire rubbed the chain guard if not repositioned--not much room there to reposition! A previous owner installed D606 and removed the chain guard because it rubbed, (which I reinstalled as it keeps a lot of mud from being driven into the chain). What is not known--and this is just a guess--if the tire has just enough clearance on installation, will it still have 'enough' clearance when you are hard cornering. I would think that if you put enough pressure on the sidewall, it will 'flow' outward and perhaps flex into the swing-arm--which is bad, cough, giving credibility to the OEM recommended tire widths. revmaaatin.> > I got some good feedback on my question regarding finding/purchasing a second set of wheels and you like to thank the group but yet to get a final solution.
