BMW sells Metzeler, Cost more $27+-, compaired to $8 -10,

But "Usualy" BMW, only sell's what been tested best.

(or at least in the top 3)

So I'm realy trusting BMW's reputation at this time, Not Metzeler.

Not sure of the HD's tubes.

 

Maybe we can all write "motorcycle consumer news" and get them to do a consumers report on inner tubes and Pre flat/Blow out tips, like pre-"slime"-ing.

I think Metzeler makes the best all around tubes.  The Moose Racing heavy duty tube is made by Metzeler.  It is 3mm of natural rubber and comes in most all sizes.  A thicker tube would be the Bridgestone ultra heavy duty tube at 4mm but they are not made in a 17".  There was a company selling these "Monster" tubes to fit the KLR but they were an 18" tube for the rear.   If you want a thick tube, I'd go for the Moose or Bridgestone for the front and the Moose for the rear.  If you are wanting a good standard thickness tube, I like the IRC tubes. That is true, but if you are using a HD tube to stop a nail, you are mistaken.  That is not what a HD tube is for.  If you ride off road and ride where there are rocks, a HD tube will help resist pinch flats.  There isn't anything that will stop a nail from giving you a flat beside going with a Bib-Mouse insert, and those also have limitations.  There is no perfect tire/tube combination for all situations.  If you ride strictly on road, I don't see much advantage for using a HD tube other than piece of mind.  (and we all know what that is worth) Fred http://www.arrowheadmotorsports.com     [b]From:[/b] jeff@... shameless plug: Buy what Fred recommends. There is much to be said for buying from a guy/gal who rides. For the past 6 years, when I have needed a tube, "Fred, send me the best tube you are selling" he does, and I have been delighted. (I buy one for now, and one for later...as I live where there is nothing like what you need on anybodies shelf when you need it today.) Net result, there have only been two flats in 45K plus miles; both related to non-paved roads. One, the 20p nail shredded the HD tube--days after remarking, "I don't have falts." the second flat, a 10p finish nail did not fully shred the MD tube, but it diced it enough that it was not worth patching two two-inch slices that were greater than 50% penetration of the tube thickness, plus the two puncture holes. I stopped truszting BMW's opinion when my GS final drive went up in smoke in route to Dead Horse Alaska. I ride a KLR now and bought the IRC HD tubes because that is what my local shop had available. I had them order me some Kenda HD tubes later and have them on the shelf. Even JC Whitney sells HD tubes now. Never trust something that says it will not fail, rather trust what you can fix when it does. That is how you get home at the end of the day! Chris
