large luggage rack & trunk combo

I presently have a small trunk hard mounted to my stock luggage rack My previous KLR had a large aftermarket rack about 24' wide. I miss not being able to strap large things to the rack, but don't want to give up the lockable, out of site, security the trunk provides. I am considering ordering a large rack and quick release trunk. I would like input others who have tried ths setup. Will the trunks base plate get in the way and reduce the usefulness of the rack when the trunk is removed?    Craig Kahler
