will not idle

I own a '09' klr 650. When I start the bike with the chock on it runs fine, but the minute I take the choke of it dies. I was wondering if anyone had any ideas on why this is happening.

Clogged pilot jet. Manual cleaning is the sure cure, but you might get lucky and get by with some Seafoam in the fuel, or for a better bet, some Yamaha carb cleaner in the float bowl.

Tony, Here are the high-level steps. Be careful and pay attention to how everything goes together: Take off the carb, remove the top cover. Remove slide, diaphragm and needle to prevent damage remove bowl, being careful of the gasket. unscrew pilot jet. clean all the holes in the pilot jet with carb cleaner and a guitar string or strand from a brass wire brush and pressurized carb cleaner. clean the passages by spraying pressurized carb cleaner through the pilot circuit, looking to make sure it comes squirting out the holes in the venturi. take the end off a cotton swab and spin it in the hole where the pilot jet goes. reassemble. run some sea foam through it for a couple of tanks. good as new. Yep. Imagine a Suzuki GT-750 sitting in the basement for 18 years with a full tank of gas. That s a pretty good description!

 

On the other hand, my KLR in California sat for exactly one year, full tank of gas with some Seafoam added. I had intended to drain the carb, but next thing I knew, I was on my way back to PA, not knowing it would be a full 12 months till I came back to it. It started as if I had ridden it the day before. (Don t try this with a 250 Ninja!)

Do the easy stuff first.  Will your bike idle without the choke and with the throttle?  If so, you need to turn in your idle speed screw till it idles on it's own.  Set the idle speed to what your owners manual tells you. I have an 09 - you need to let it warm up before driving off. These bikes are cold blooded by nature.

#ygrps-yiv-975919594 p {margin:0;}If you do the basic carb mods, warm-up time is literally a few seconds. My '09 will idle without choke after maybe 5-10 seconds on a typical SoCal morning, and runs with no sputters, etc. by the time I hit the end of the block. One shim, drill the slide and back out the idle mixture 1/2 turn from stock.  Idle is set to about 1100RPM when it's hot. It's quick and easy.  Give it a shot if yours is cold-blooded. -Jeff Khoury
