Over the years with the KLR I have found I care more about what tires I have on if I am off road than I do on the highway. That is, an off road design works ok for me on the highway better than a highway design could ever work off road.
I have run the stock Dunlops off road and in a bit of wet rough ruts or wet woods they turned the ride into a nightmare. If it is bone dry you will be ok.
The Kenda K270 does ok both on and off, I will probably get these again. I also liked the Pirelli MT21 which did a great job off road.
Currently, I have a set of spare rims with Kenda 760 Trackmaster II's which I mount if I specifically have a weekend of woods riding. These are bad boys off road - the stock tires or even k270 don't really compare. I highly recommend if indeed you want to feel comfortable and confident with the KLR in the woods or trails. personally I find it hard to believe they are DOT.
On the highway the 760 rolls along (loudly) just fine, but you probably don't want to get too cute with them.
Just offerin more feedback. I will keep the 760's and will probably get another k270. For me I own the KLR650 because at any given time the country roads are near me, and it would be unacceptable after a little rain to say - oh I guess I have to stay on the pavement for this ride.
baloney! If I am gonna bother to wash this bike once a year,(whether it needs it or not) it better have some mud on it.
I am sure more Highway tires are worth it if your heading across the country, but be careful on gravel.
