set timing

Post by redred321 » Sat Apr 10, 2010 9:17 pm

I need to set the timing on a 1999 KLR. DOES THE KLR FIRE EVERY CRANKSHAFT ROATION? On a car, one rotation expels gas, the next rotation compresses it and the sparkplug fires only on the compression rotation. On a car you have the distributor and compression stroke synchronized. Otherwise the sparkplug firs on the exhaust TDC. Can anyone tell me how to determine which Crankshaft rotation the spark plug fires on? I have both manuals but can not find mention of this. It maybe that the 20 yr old design has the KLR firing every rotation.

Attachments : You're right, it fires every rotation. There is no cam shaft sensor on this engine. redred321 wrote:

set timing

#ygrps-yiv-910153026 p {margin:0;}Most motorcycles have a "waste-spark" ignition, in that it fires every rotation whether it needs to or not.  It simplifies the system, leading to higher reliability. I'm not sure of the angle at which it's supposed to fire though. -Jeff Khoury

I'll be curious to hear how you set the ignition timing. The manual does have a timing spec (38-42 advance at 2700 rpm), but sets forth no method for adjustment.

First thanks for the timing information. A novel idea for the Kick Stand. One guy made 1 in the shape of Texas so he leaves that imprint whereever he rides. FOR YOU Put the stand up and build a pad shape to fit. Mine started out as a 3" circle I use JB weld to pretty up the weld. Below is a good information site on modifying seat form. http://www.diymotorcycleseat.com/foam_basics.htm
