It will make a bit of a racket, but she'll be all right, just runner like that. I recommend knocking that piece of metal off of there first, so you can get the axle through. Tk

Actually, I just drove the axle through with my splitting maul. After a liberal dose of WD40 and a 5' breaker bar, the nut went on fine.

a few more observations......
Hey All....
After out on a ride today on my new 09 a few things I noticed I need to address.
At about 4k rpm and 55-60 mph on a straight road I noticed a slight surge at times under steady throttle. Is this normal on a new KLR?
Windshield....Gotta do something about it. The wind seems to hit me eye level on my helmet. Guess a taller screen is necessary.
Any recommendations? I am about 5'11"
Playing around after I got home with some luggage on the rack I noticed 2 little rear hooks that seem to work for rear tie points,
but front I can't find anything. I noticed the front bolt for the rack could be removed and with a longer bolt and S hook I think I can place that
S hook between 2 nuts on that front rack bolt for a tie down point. Anyone else tried this?
I ordered a 16t sprocket this week and am prepping the bike for a few short trips before any longer ones.
Oh, also anyone tried that big rubber O ring mod for a throttle lock? Or am I better off getting a lever lock like Vista Cruise?
I can also tell you I installed the 7/8 Grip Puppies in about 3 minutes, that so far is the best thing I have done! These are great!
