Hi everyone, I have never posted but I check in here every few days and have been a member for about a year. I have a 1997 KLR and about a week ago I noticed my neutral light flashing and my rpm needle amd my temp needle go flat at the same time. I am thinking it is the kickstand switch. Anybody have any idea what it may be? It is happening more frequently now but the bike starts and runs fine even when the neutral light turns off and the needles go flat. Thanks for your input in andvance!

awehber,
I've only got a minute but taking a quick look at a wiring diagram the
neutral light, temp gage and tach all share the same ground. I'm gonna
bet if you check at night the dash lights also aren't working. Does the
horn work?
Maybe check the ground connection(s) near the instrument cluster. The
ground wire is black with a yellow stripe. If I recall correctly there
is a ground attached to the frame near the steering head.
Best,

That might be it, but they also share a common ground on the chassis. The sidestand and clutch interlocks use the same ground, but I don't see how a malfunction could defeat the main ground. Of course, my grasp of electrics is deficient in many respects, but I'd be looking first for a loose battery terminal (in part because I know where it is), then at the Blac and yellow to the chassis ground (which I would have to hunt for).
They also get power from the same source, a white wire from the battery to the R/R, from there brown and white to a common brown wire. Another opportunity to look for a loose battery connection.

Maybe just start with the connector that goes from the cluster to the wiring harness. Under a black plastic cover behind the fairing and under the cluster itself. While in there, just go ahead and pull all the connectors, hit 'em with dielectric grease, reconnect, and if symptoms still persist start trouble shooting further down the line as previously suggested.

My neutral started coming on all the time 5 to 10 thousand miles ago. I fiddled with it some searching for wire problems and even replaced the little thingy that the wire plugs into on the side of the engine. No success. I just ride with it on. A friend used to have a car where the oil light stayed on. A piece of black tape over it fixed it....hah! My 99 used to be teal green. Green is my least favorite color and I ride Kawasakis. Go figure. Red is my favorite color, ahh.......go Ducatis. My teal bike now has bedliner plastic with a 3 tone car paint gas tank . Black, red and yellow (my favorite colors + mud tight now). I have left the mud on it so as to piss the Krooozer riders off. I saw a Yamaha sport bike at a dealer today that everything was chrome including the plastic fairing. How de do dat?

The plot thickens or muddies up in that I installed one of Tammy's bypass switches and things have been sort of ammiss since. I am not an electrical whiz. I stare at light bulbs in amazement.
