Back ground first -----> '05, 27k plus miles, air box mod,Hi-Flo air filter, stock pipe but cleaned out( cone removed, baffles drilled out, 2 inch stub) drilled carb,re-jetted,stock sprockets,Sea Foam every 3-4k ,use regular gas .
Me----> 5'11'', 220 lbs,gear on ALWAYS, so maybe add another 15-20lbs (?)
Problem-----> Once in a while, very seldom, I have this urge to Red Line the Mule ,1st gear no problem,2nd gear same, 3rd gotta push a little longer, 4th gotta push even longer, 5th... no way... even downhill and back wind .
Question ------> Why won't she Red Line in 5th ? At least once just for my personal satisfaction ---

#ygrps-yiv-1701644036 p {margin:0;}The exponential nature of wind resistance. After a certain point a significant horsepower increase is required to move even a little faster. You can learn about it by studying up on fluid dynamics.
The same thing happens to boats before they plane.

#ygrps-yiv-1946744448 p {margin:0;}To give a real-world example that I'm familiar with:
A 378-foot Coast Guard High-Endurance Cutter has a dual power plant:
2@ 12-cylinder, 24-piston main diesel engines, roughly 3,000 BHP each.
and
2@ Pratt and Whitney main gas turbine engines, roughly 18,000 BHP each.
On the diesels at flank speed (balls-to-the-wall), top speed is 18.5 knots (21 mph)
On the turbines at flank speed, top speed is 29 knots (33mph)
So, adding 33,000 hp (eleven times more power) only gets you 11.5 more knots more speed. The effect is amplified in water, but the same effect is true in the wind. A fluid is a fluid.

Short answer: Too much wagon. Not enough ponies. =)
It's overgeared a bit from the factory for whatever reason and there simply isn't enough motor to pull it.
I've had several bikes that wouldn't max out the revs in high gear.

I have never tried on my KLR, but to get the most top end on just about anything, you have to lay on the tank. Have you tried that? Be careful!
It isn't your weight, it's your area.

What is speed at redline if you drop a tooth in front?

Pull in the clutch, she'll redline. ;') I've seen 100mph GPS speed on a downhill while tucked in tight. In another instance, during the 2002 Alcan 5000 I spun the speedo needle past 120 mph and back to the wrong side of zero (broke the cable), so I had no concept of how fast I was actually going. I passed one of the rally cars during a transit section and when we got to the special section, he comes up to me and says, "You must've been doing at least 120, cuz I was going 100mph and you passed me like I was standing still." Can't verify that one. And one more for fun, on my way back to NYC from Wisconsin (a cousin's wedding) I was stuck behind a caravan of school buses and when the opportunity finally arose to pass - on an uphill of course - I tucked in, pinned the throttle and pulled out to the passing lane. As I pass the last of what seemed like a sea of yellow buses, I see a police cruiser in the median. DOH! I didn't have time to even look at my speedo when he hit the lights and came racing out. I pulled over, removed my helmet and gloves, and sat on the bike waiting for the officer. He came up, noticed the worn out tire strapped on top of the Givi tail box, camping gear, clothes, etc. in saddlebags, and my ~240lb ass and he said, "Been on the road a while huh?" When I told him I was coming from Wisconsin he whistled through his teeth and said, "That's a loooong way on a bike like that. Any idea how fast you were going?" I responed,"Honestly, officer, I have NO idea." He chuckled, fully believing me and said, "Well, I clocked you at 95 mph, but I'm gonna do you a favor and you write you a ticket for failure to obey a traffic ordinance." I almost begged him for the ticket to prove that a heavily loaded KLR could pull 95mph on an uphill, but thought about the points and the fine and gladly accepted his favor. Speeding ticket would have cost me somewhere in the neighborhood of $350, ticket he wrote was listed as a $90 offense, and when I sent my money in, I got a refund of $30 for overpayment. OK, I'll bite...
120 MPH? I believe you, but that MUST have been a downhill. And over redline too.
What's the punch line?
