lane splitting 405/san diego fwy; santa rides a red klr!

Post by Jeffrey » Fri Dec 18, 2009 10:25 pm

They finally fixed the 405 fwy between LAX and the 10/Santa Monica Fwy. There are 5 lines now--2 double yellow and 1 white line between the Diamond/HOV and the next lane. This makes lane splitting a breeze; even for the KLR650's wide handlebars/compared to a pure street bike. However. from the 10 to the 101 fwys, the 405 is still pretty dangerous because you don't get the extra room and cagers still seem to really hate motorcycles passing them when they are stuck in traffic. And today friday, boy were they stuck! Jeffrey #3 HAPPY HOLIDAYS

Ha! Try that shit in Georgia and they will take a rider out, gang rape him on the ground while suffering multiple broken bones, kill him and then tell the judge "he needed killin." The judge will dismiss all charges... I work with the Gov and can use the emergency lane if I need to; I did that one time and a big rig chased me into the grass and almost got me... I loved watching him cry like a little bitch as we met at the next weigh station and they slapped the cuffs on his ass.  Let the lane splitting begin, I love it and think it should be so... #ygrps-yiv-1411582708 p {margin:0;}I lane split (safely) on the 405 daily.  I feel MUCH more secure in between the lanes than I do waiting to get sandwiched between to soccer-moms driving SUVs.  I've personally been right next to two rear-enders (the most common freeway accident).   I'd much rather be side-swiped at a 3mph speed delta than squished between a hammer and an anvil.  I've never had anyone INTENTIONALLY drive me off the road, but I have been "muscled" by a guy in an Acura SUV on Wilshire blvd.  He has a fancy body shop bill to show for it.  Cell-phone talkers are the worst.  Never paying attention, weaving in their lane.  It's funny how you develop a sixth-sense about people who are about to jump a lane. Jeff's force escalation policy for inattentive/aggressive drivers: 1. Vroom, Vroom! 2. Beep, Beep! 3. Knock, Knock! (on the window) and, if there's actual aggression involved: 4. Dented door/lost mirror 5. Good 'ol fashioned @$$-kickin' I've gotten to 4.5... Some will say that I shouldn't kick a door or mirror if someone actively, intentionally cuts me off.  I say that amounts to vehicular assault / attempted murder and my reaction is justified.  It will take some serious twist of logic to convince me otherwise. -Jeff Khoury

Hey I actually know where your talking about... ;-) Just drove through there the other day, and headed back Monday night (almost midnight so traffic should be fairly light) Flew into LAX and first m/c I see in the parking garage is a KLR. Not that I am adding anything of value to the conversation, just thought it was cool I actually knew the exact spot you were talking about. Yes having lived in non-lane splitting places thought the lanes where kinda tight for KLR handlebars but no doubt would do it if I lived out here. Pardon my ignorance, but what is this lane-splitting you are talking about? And is it legal in Oregon?! :) Sounds like my Renthal Desert bars may be too wide for it? -Rich

Ever see that space in between cars that are stopped or moving on the highway and think would'nt it be cool to just drive between the cars and keep moving ? "Lane Splitting" they all do it in Cali.. heck had a cop on a Harley caught up to us in the HOV lane (special lane for car poolers (2 or more or m/c) btw we were exceeding the posted limit, I think is just a suggestion in Cali. Anyway he broke the solid line (shame shame) lanesplitted to our right passed us at what had to be about 80+ mph, cut back over the solid line (shame shame shame) into the HOV and rolled on outta sight. No flashing lights, just riding down the 405. No idea if its legal by you, not legal in most states actually. I did it in Florida when I was stationed down there getting onto the base in the morning, no idea if it was legal, but all of us on bikes did it, not to mention back then m/c could park on the pier near your ship, it was worth it getting rained on at 4:35 pm daily. I actually miss that old KZ400 for some reason, even though it felt dangerous at 55 mph ( with not enough snot to pull out and away ) used to ride that thing all the time down there, even down the river banks.. ;-) Oh my.. went back through there (405) last night, highway was wonderful at almost midnight, exited and headed into LAX and found all the traffic... what a cluster F**K !! Appears to be the same KLR (red with a rack) in the parking garage. Hope all a Merry Xmas and a Happy New Year.. Dooden A15 Green Ape

Did some reading on Oregon motorcycle law. It's not legal here, that stinks. Oh well, I would probably get door jacked by some soccer mom getting mad that I was getting home faster then she is in her 8,000# Suburban. I also found out I have to pass an ATV course to ride my street legal bike on a dirt road now... g'damn liberals always trying to save us from ourselves. Let Darwin do his job (if you believe in that kinda crud...) Note: That law in Oregon about the ATV course applies to ANYONE riding in Oregon on public land, even if you are from a different state. www.rideatvoregon.com -Rich Disappointed in the Portland area.
