nitrous & high speed runs

Post by transalp 1 » Wed Dec 02, 2009 5:21 pm

Attachments : #ygrps-yiv-176000645 p {margin:0;} Big trailies just aren't meant for high speed work. I have no interest in seeing how fast my KLR can or can be made to go. =) I once ran my former DL1000 up to just over 140mph after eliminating the 5th & 6th gear restriction by fooling the ECM into thinking it was still in 4th. Apparently, Suzuki neutered the bike in the top two gears by over 30h.p. Anyhow, the combination of tall bike, soft suspension (by street standards) and weird aerodynamics made for a most uncomfortable experience.  eddie PS: A V-Strom lister did some intake and exhaust mods to his DL and saw a GPS indicated 150+ on his 'strom. Scary stuff...

Rick, When I had my 16T sprocket on, with my tires, etc.  80mph was 5K rpm, almost exactly.  A little math comes up with ~120mph at redline. The problem with this is that at least around here on the grooved freeways, anything above 85 is a butt-puckering experience of wobble and instability...no amount of suspension adjustment will fix it.  The one time I was able to get it up over 100 was on a recently paved stretch of the 405 in the south bay and I reached an indicated 110 (with ~7% for speedo error for an actual of about 103 or so).  It was a calm and cool night at about 1AM, so conditions were about as perfect as you could get for a high-speed KLR run.  My brother was pacing me on his R1, and he let me run a little ways before he embarrassed me. I suppose if you were running street-y tires and had a smooth road you MIGHT be able to make it. -Jeff Khoury ----- Original Message ----- From: "Rick McCauley" ramachm12@yahoo.com> To: "dsn klr650" dsn_klr650@yahoogroups.com> Sent: Wednesday, December 2, 2009 12:10:13 PM GMT -08:00 US/Canada Pacific Subject: Re: [DSN_KLR650] Nitrous ?   I would surely think it could be done cheaper also. The only time I would push the button, would be in 5th gear once the tach got to 5,000 just to feel the extra oomph for top end purposes only. The kit says it can be used once the engine reaches 2,500 rpm, and only if the throttle is wide open of course. I think it would be easier on the motor to wait for higher revs. Just don't let it over rev. Wonder what top speed would be at redline with a 16 tooth front sprocket !!   Rick A17 From: Thomas Komjathy klrsisfiddy@yahoo.com> To: Rick McCauley ramachm12@yahoo.com>; dsn_klr650@yahoogroups.com Sent: Wed, December 2, 2009 1:14:49 PM Subject: Re: [DSN_KLR650] Nitrous ? Ouch! I think we can put one together for less than that, if so, I will alert the list. Just think, open KLR drags at the MOAB.... I told a guy riding a KLR about this project at the Vortex in Little Five Points, Atlanta and he looked at me like I just pissed in his cornflakes, oh the purests of us all. We did test the outer limits of the KLR engine and when that thing came apart, it blow chunks out the inlet and exhaust. I think the only think usable is the cases and a few internal gears. BANG!!!! It will give up to a 9 h.p. boost. I have to believe the KLR engine could take that. But I don't see it in my near future. It has  a $648 price tag. He said I could easily get away with a 20 HP system, for that final blast done the front straight on track days... Has anyone ever looked into nitrous for the KLR. Nothing ratical of course. Maybe there is a kit that would give the KLR an extra 5 or 6 ponies that could come in handy at some unforseen time.   Rick A17

torque peak

Post by Rick McCauley » Thu Dec 03, 2009 7:54 am

Ask and it shall be given you.  Look at the torque peak on my KLR.  As one lister noted, it is  not a torque peak but rather a torque mesa J

This graph came from a test in Motorcyclist. I was surprised to see that the peak toque on the KLR comes at 2,500 rpm's, and at that rpm, the hp is about 12.

With my big body on the KLR, it does not like being below 3,000 rpm's. If I was to roll on the throttle at 2,500 rpm's in anything above 3rd gear, there would indeed be strong complaints from the KLR.

Also note the dramatic drop in torque from 2,500 to 3,000 rpm's. If that drop could be leveled out, the KLR would have considerably better low end grunt. You guys under 200 lbs probably don't even notice, but I bet it would have much better roll on grunt if that torque drop wasn't there. I am not trying to start a thread on torque vs horsepower, I just thought it was interesting that the torque peak was so low, on a bike that preferred to be closer to 4,000 rpm.
