highway wreck - lesson learned the hard way

Post by robertwaters » Sat Sep 26, 2009 7:51 am

I had my first highway spill yesterday. Have 15 k on my 07. Thought I'd pass this along...it might help keep someone else from making the same mistake. I was headed west at about 55mph. Needed to turn around. Saw a drive way to my left. Had some speed but thought I could make it. The problem is, I started the sharp turn while still on my rear break. The road was slicker than I anticipated. Suddenly the rear of the bike was going west. It actually spun around, went down and threw me off. I went heals over head. Had on a helment and first gear goat. Something did hit the inside of my knee and bruised it. I'm a bit sore today but learned a good lesson without a lot of damage. The worst damage was to my pride. Bikes Blues and Barbaques is going on and there were bikes behind me--saw the whole thing. Lesson: Stay off the back break on a sharp turn and wear padded pants. Robert Waters Huntsville, AR

Glad to hear you're alright. As a recent victim of an unscheduled dismount, I feel your pain. Quite literally. Ride safe and recover quickly. - Jeff Khoury On Sep 26, 2009, at 5:50 AM, "robertwaters" wrote:

~~~The Mother of stupidity is always pregnant yes?=:-) Not trying to have a go at you Robert...honestly. Back in 96', Homestead Fla.- Penguin roadracing came down to do a track school at the new track there. The AMA was in town, Miggy, Doug Polen showed everyone how to ride a motorcycle that weekend. Anyways, in class (not taught by any of the AMA folks), we were taught...only brake when you are in a straight line. Do not turn while braking. When you go into a turn, you're off the brakes. Period. Glad to hear you are all right and on the mend. Crashing is never any fun, especially on pavement. I've been down on the pavement a few times, never highsided though (knocking on wood) Jake Reddick Fla.
I have a friend that has a KLR. He takes his wife riding on it. They both wear a dog when riding. Well, at least it would seem like you were wearing the dogs.
The goat was in first gear so since it was going so slow it was not injured. It is an old goat, but I'm going to keep wearing it. LOL
