plugged pilot jet again - larger jets/in line filters help????

Post by hansenj32 » Wed Aug 26, 2009 9:31 am

A few years ago I had the dreaded plugged pilot jet, but was lucky and able to get all of the bowl screws & the pilot jet removed. After cleaning the jet (I was amazed at how incredibly small the hole is) and re-assembling everything, the engine ran as it should. I subsequently switched form Sta-Bil to Sea Foam for winter storage and everything seemed to be hunky dory for the past (2) seasons. About a month ago, out of the blue, the pilot jet appears to be plugged again. I really dread going in after it a 2nd time and feel like a fool for not replacing the phillips head screws w/ allen heads while I had it apart last time and pray I can remove them again w/ the carb attached to the engine. I was wondering, those of you who have used Dyna Jet or other kits that utilize larger jets, specifically the pilot, does this seem to help reduce pilot jet plugging? Those of you who use in-line fuel filters, does this seem to help reduce the jet plugging? Lastly, those of you who have converted your float bowl screws to allen head versions, do you recall the thread size and length so I can purchase them ahead of time? Thanks, Jake

plugged pilot jet again - larger jets/in line filters help????

Same here, Jake. After a couple years of problem-free KLR ownership, my A13 developed isymptoms of a clogged jet - hard to start, refused to idle without choke, backfiring on deceleration. Pulled the bowl, removed and cleaned the pilot jet, reassembled, gassed up with Seafoam and she ran fine. I never could determine whether the jet was actually plugged or not but was happy with the results - for a few months. Like deja-vu all over again, she developed the same exact symptoms one day last week. This time I rode away on stumbling half choke through 5 miles of city traffic, massaging the choke to idle through stoplights, to see if it would magically clear itself. Reached my destination and the bike sat for 30 minutes. Hopped back on to leave and she started, idled, and ran as normal. Still does. This also happened the few times I rode it just before the recent jet clean-out - a couple miles of riding (heat?) seemed to lessen or eliminate the effects, but eventually it became bad enough on startup to warrant intervention. Seems to me the jet should either be plugged or not, and I'm wondering if there are forces at work besides the pilot jet that are contributing to these symptoms. <><><><><><> <><><><><><> Steve, Sounds to me like you've got something loose in the float bowl. One time it get sucked up against the pilot jet and clogs or partially clogs the jet causing the rough running issue. Then when the engine is off the vacuum is released from the pilot jet allowing the particle to sink away from the jet. Next time the bike runs the particle doesn't block the jet and everything seems fine. I'm with the suggestion to drain the float bowl. If you haven't done that before it's on the right side of the carb and takes an allen wrench. You can pull it all the way out and let the bowl drain. Then put it back snug but not gorilla tight. It might take a little cranking to get started as you have to pull a vacuum to get the petcock to open and flow fuel. <><><><><> <><><><><> Jake, My notes show the carb float bowl fasteners are 4mm 1.00 pitch 14mm long. If you get stainless you might consider antiseize on the threads to help you out next time you want to remove them. I've used a bronzed sintered filter (clear plastic like cone shaped body with filter inside) since 2003 when I bought my KLR. I've got 29,000 plus smiles on it now I think and no carb problems caused by dirt, rust, particles etc. I do make sure I've got the filter installed in a vertical position. Some folks report having problems with having to switch to reserve early when using a fuel filter. I don't have that issue with mine. No experience with the Dyna Jet or other jets kits. One additional thing when/as you drain that bowl-- 1. Drain/screen the fuel into a clean white cloth to see if you capture anything 2. crank the engine with the bowl drain plug removed. That will give you a flush as well. (Catch this fuel in a clean, white cloth as well) CAUTION: DO NOT LOOK AT THAT DRAIN HOLE WHEN YOU CRANK OR YOU WILL GET AN EYE FULL OF FUEL. Please: Place a cloth near the drain hole as it will really pump out the fuel. = A surprising amount of fuel. Just a couple of seconds of cranking will be enough to flush--at least it was for me. This procedure works well if you get some hydrogen2oxygen mixed into your fuel as well revmaaatin.

Actually just back it out about 1 turn. That will open up the drain on the bottom of the bowl. Another nice thing about that, is that you can put a small hose on the drain nipple, and the gas will go where you want it to, instead of on the engine. Rick A17

I'd do this outdoors with a fire extinguisher close by! Ed

Cranking does help flush the bowl better than just draining. What I started doing is, sticking the red tube on your can of carb cleaner up the drain, and flushing it with carb cleaner. This not only flushes, but helps clean any residue that might be starting. Rick A17

Jim, NKLR? A KLR for sale does not get more KLR than that. Hope it goes well for you and a speedy recovery. revmaaatin.
