I guess I have to qualify my last remark. Yes, there are responsible riders who ride H-Ds. However from my (probably skewed) perspective they definitely are in the minority.

To give a little background, I live near Marina Del Rey, CA - home of Bartel's H-D, one of the largest dealerships in the country. On any given weekend morning I ride either my KLR or my old Seca II down to Starbucks (right across the street from Bartel's) for my ritual "Coffee black, cigarette." As I watch all the bikes riding up and down Lincoln Boulevard, what I see on Harleys is so stereotypical that it's almost sad. Pipes so loud they make your ears bleed. Terrible excuses for gear. Rev, Rev, Rev to keep those vibrating chrome-plated turds running.

As I pulled out to continue my day Sunday, I pulled up to a light next to one of them. His 80ci Dyna was sitting there in what sounded like a continuous backfire, shaking like a dog crapping a peach seed. He was wearing summer-weight camo pants, sneakers, a long-sleeved H-D shirt (natch), a doo-rag with - get this: a polo helmet, and a bandana around his nose and mouth.

As we turned on to the Marina Freeway, he opened that baby up. It sounded like I was in between the lanes at a funny car race but mysteriously he wasn't going all that fast. I wanted to get away from this "bad biker", because even inside my full-face helmet with the visor down it was painfully loud. I gently rolled on the throttle of my 17yr-old 600cc Yamaha and quite easily pulled away. I thought to myself that he'd spent a whole lot of money to piss people off and then be unable to keep up with a $1,000.00 commuter bike.

 But, to each their own.

 /rant off.

Again I say... Well said.

The thing I don't understand is that those pipes are totally illegal, and no law enforcement anywhere that i know of ever writes a straight pipe Harley a ticket.

They used to be illegal. I got 3 excessive noise tickets in my
hometown growing up. One in my Ford with twin glass pacs, 2 on my
Vespa. On a Vespa????? It is amazing how loud they were when you
pulled the muffler off. ahh you know 14 and young and dumb. My
brother got a ticket for his straight scavenger pipes on his 50 Merc.
and the car wasn't even running as the cop could see since his Merc
was jacked up in the rear and that the pipes had no mufflers. A buddy
that had a Sportster on straight pipes got a ticket one daywhen we
were riding. They were serious in my hometown over that. But .....
you had to realize ..... my High School had a sign that said speed up
to 90 mph out in front instead of the nowdays slow to 20 mph.....
heh! At last period class each day, a guy on a straight pipe
Sportster that got an early out work permit would roar down the
school ...... starightaway maybe followed by a Chevy 409 going
sideways with loud pipes. Most of us survived those days but quite a
few didn't. I don't know how they get by with straight pipes these days.

That's because underneath that clean exterior, many of today's cops are tatted-out dirtbags who ride Harleys and actually love straight pipes. I personally know one of them. I know one too. After he arrested the dirtbag that broke into my mother's home he save a baby from a burning car on his way home.--- In DSN_KLR650@yahoogroups.com, Tengai Mark Van Horn wrote:

A favorite place to ride here on a warm summer night here in Southern
New Hampshire, is to head towards the coast. There are several things
the PD's on the coastal towns "Do Not Tolerate": one is public
drinking, and the other is loud pipes. I would not have believed
it ,if I had not seen it in person. Even the local sport bike riders
with loud exhausts avoid the beach towns all together. Salisbury Beach
Mass, not so much. But Seabrook, Hampton, and Rye, look out they mean
business. They have foot patrol, marked and unmarked cars, bicycles,
motorcycles, even horses for the sand. The residents of the town spoke
up, and the politicians listened. Wait a minute, isn't that the way it
 should work?

YES. That is the way it should be.

I called the County Sherriff's dep't here in Bureau County IL.
I asked them why Harley's are allowed to run straight pipes on their bikes,
 but never get pulled over. The dispatchers response to me was;

"Do you have any idea what goes on in this county? We have to do all the things we do, with a limited number of officers"

I guess they are soooo busy that not one straight piped bike could be pulled over in the last 25 years.... Bull crap.

My daughter hit a deer a couple of summers ago. Cop was out to the house in about 45 minutes. We live in the country about 25 minutes from County office. If they are so busy, I would have thought it would have been days before they could get an officer out to us.

I don't know what it is, but something is rotten in Bureau County IL.
