the wave
7. the wave.....
As a small boat sailor, maybe I'm a big dreamer.
When I used to keep my boat at a Marina slip, when I headed out -under power
in the channel- I always gave a formal Hand Salute {as opposed to a Flag
Dip} to any incomming skipper. {The same when I was the returning vessel}. I
often got odd looks but the salute was always returned . . . by other
SAILORS {'rag-baggers'}. Typically, the power-boaters had NO CLUE.
When I was in SEA {USAF} I even got a return salute from a Jet Fighter!! As
I was going to another aircraft along the Active, another was taxiing in.
Just for the Hell of it, I thriugh the pilot a salute. He returned it by
extending & retracting the in-flight refuling pick-up next to his canopy !!
Some people get it; some don't.

Most wave back, sometimes with the cool guy slicing down action, some with
the 90 degree V for Victory, and maybe 5% with a full fledged but shortened
full wrist action maneuver.
I felt nostalgic for the old days when the wave wasn't even questioned.
