high speed, heat soaked, power fade?

Post by kusstj » Sat Jun 27, 2009 9:08 am

Team, what does this sound like?? Long hot ride, 30 miles into it, 95f outside, humid, get on a stretch of highway where the traffic is flying 75mph or more. I get up to speed and hold throttle absolutely still, with the least throttle possible while still holding 75 mph and about 5400rpm. hold it there minute after minute. Temp guage indicates normal, just a tick over straight up. Almost like it gradually leaned out, or heat build up caused ignition faulter, or something carburation wise was plugged. I get a power fade, sputter, after which I quickly festher the throttle and get power back just fine after perhaps 2 seconds. I stopped for a few minutes and restarted and within three miles, replicated the effect. I stop and fuel up and purchase a can of sea foam. dump about half the can in. Then runs fine for another 20miles, as though nothing ever happended. any ideas guys?? todd in Chaska

Hi Todd, Fuel filter, fuel tank venting or vacuum operated petcock problem. More likely the latter. Just a guess, Mike Martin, Louisville, KY ________________________________ From: kusstj Almost like it gradually leaned out, or heat build up caused ignition faulter, or something carburation wise was plugged. The same has happened to me; I suspect vapor lock: fuel vaporizing in the tank, fuel line (which gets a stream of hot air from the radiator), or in the float bowl. I kind of hope it'e the fuel line, because then I will have use for the piece of insulation I have been carrying around for the last couple of years in hopes it happens again. I could just install it now, but then I'd have no idea if it was working.

I should think any information you got today would be out of date by the time you got there.
