Great feed back .Thanks. I already have the iridium plug installed . I am more tempted to go with the larger jet and go down if I have to,we'll see how the thumper reacts. As far as Federal Lands none within 7-800 miles radius (monkey butt), plenty of gravel , dirt back roads,jeep trails, even skunk trails...

I would start with the 148 main jet and the clip in the number 3 notch. Always use the Thick Brass Spacer on top of the C clip. A .030 #4 SS washer will allow you to make half notch adjsutments. You might as well install the NGK Iridium spark plug since it is the best spark plug available for the KLR. Read the spark plug and tail pipe as you make adjustments between long rides. If you continue to run lean and are unable to find a good adjustment then you might want to tape over the holes in the airbox mod. kientech exhaust modification

For what it's worth, I'll put in my experiences with the KienTech exhaust mod done by Jesse Kientz at Kientech Engineering. I had thought about doing the holesaw mod, but remembered someone mentioning Jesse and being very pleased with the outcome, so I gave him a call. Jesse normally works on Suzuki DR's, but reluctantly agreed to do the muffler off my KLR. Not only is he very knowledgeable about the innards of the muffler, but he is very particular as well. He cuts the canister in half so he can make sure the spark arrester does not get damaged, and he also does some welding inside to make sure the muffler and spark arrestor hold up over the long haul and through lots of abuse. Like Jeff, Jesse is NOT a fan of loud exhausts either, so he promised a deeper tone, but not much more noise which was exactly what I wanted. I also wanted a bit of a turn-down at the outlet so rain wouldn't run in so readily when parked outside overnight. I boxed it up and shipped it to Jesse. He told me he was pretty busy, and likely wouldn't get to it for awhile, but in 2 weeks it was back on the bench. (I did this last winter by the way) I thought about doing a write-up about it then, but wanted to put a few miles on it to give it a good test. After an entire winter and most of the spring laid up with back trouble, I am FINALLY able to ride and have about 400 miles on the exhaust so far. I asked Jesse about needing to rejet since it appears to flow more volume. He suggested shimming the needle jet with 1 washer. I tried the bike without shimming first so I could see if I noticed a difference. Sure enough, it was harder starting when cold, seemed to take longer to warm up, and felt like it was starving a bit for fuel. I dropped in 1 washer and problems solved. After 400 miles, what do I think? Getting Jesse's love and attention for your KLR isn't real cheap at $100, but I feel the quality of his workmanship is worth it. I feel better knowing that it has been inspected inside and out, and he gives his personal guarantee that it will hold together for the long haul, plus the spark arrestor is still functional. I don't notice any more noise to the exhaust, which was very important to me, and the extra fuel and free flowing intake (intake snorkle removed, Twin-Air air filter from Fred, .22 cent washer mod, and drilled carb slide) and exhaust really woke the bike up. The first ride after shimming the needle was into a 40 mph headwind. No shortage of power, and the engine was ready for more load. I am very pleased and would recommend his work to anyone considering modifying their exhaust. Ross Lindberg Finally riding in Fertile MN
