running rough after 685 install (video)... any suggestions?

Post by bensherwyn » Mon Jun 01, 2009 9:55 am

Hey all, So, I recently installed the Schnitz 685 kit on my 2003 KLR 650. Everything is back together now but the bike isn't running too well. It starts fine with the choke on and seems to idle okay for awhile, but as soon as I give it gas it begins to stumble, smoke, and die. Over the weekend, I noticed that some of my vacuum hoses were cracking, so I replaced them with the reinforced bmw-type that I've heard suggested on here. The last thing I'm thinking is that I may have missed something when I rebuilt the carburetor (Schnitz says that the stock jetting and carb settings should work well for the new kit... so I didn't do anything but clean and rebuild). I posted a video of the bike starting to http://www.tumbleweedamerica.org/klr/klr.mpg if anyone would like to hear and see the bike start, throttle, puff a little black smoke, and quit. I'll probably go back to the carb next, but I've got the nagging fear that it is something other. It sucks to keep running/idling brand new rings against a fresh hone without being able to do a proper break-in. If you've got any thoughts on this I'd be very grateful. Thanks! No one's got the answer here ?? Vermonter ? Dooden ? Rev? assumeing that the valve clearances are ok and ignition timing hasn't been messed up. something simple : check the gas petcock maybe? the air-filter ? something bizarre: valve sticking? compression relief stuck? im only guessing ....

Checking the carb / airbox would be the easiest thing to do first(black smoke). If no change, I'd have to check out the timing (rotor vs. cam markings). When checking the cam timing marks, you could check valve gaps. I've noticed that putting the cam chain tensioner back in halfway takes the slack out of the chain and gives me more assurance that the timing marks are and will remain in the proper orientation when the tensioner is put in for good. Stuck valve - Doesn't seem like you messed around with the valves, right? Don R100, A6F

Start with the simple stuff. You're out of your mind for even thinking about "the bizarre stuff" in my experience. Since you just monkeyed with the carb and did the 685 kit, my two guesses are: 1) You may have lost something from inside the carb on re-assembly. It looks and sounds like a fueling problem to me. Hard to start, throttle kills it.. Do you have an inline fuel filter? Have you drained the carb bowl to make sure it is getting fuel? 2) It's possible that your timing chain is one tooth off. Good luck Thanks CA Stu

<><><><><><><> <><><><><><><> Paul, I'm just north west of Rapid City. Contact me when you get in the area. 605 787-4441 I screen calls when I'm in so make sure you leave a message and say up front you're a KLR rider. I'll pick up if I hear you. I can point you towards some very good riding in the hills and also make a few suggestions for camping. There is a free Forest Service Travel Management map showing where you are and are not allowed to go with a motorized vehicle. You can get them at the Forest Service ranger stations. They are well worth having. Remember it's free so no reason not to get a couple. : ) I'm tearing my house apart for a renovation so probably won't have time to give you a guided tour. But if things have been going well I might be able to squeeze in a few hours. : ) If you need a place to do an oil change or some bike maintenance I've got a shop. You supply the oil and filter or other expendables.
