klr650 : stock horn

Post by Luc Legrain » Sat Jun 06, 2009 9:05 am

There has been a lots of posts regarding that poor KLR stock horn .I've tried to install car horns, truck horns, (free at the junk yard) but then I realized that most, if not all the horns on cars and trucks are kind of wind protected, There... I had it.... " The Answer, My Friend, Is NOT Blowing In The Wind " So I adjuted that little screw on the side of the horn to give me the loudest possible sound ( it says 105 db on the horn but who knows ?? ) THEN ..I TURNED IT AROUND ,YES SIREEE,FACING THE GAS TANK !!! There is just enough room to do that. No I did not copy anybody, I'm sure it's been done already. The horn is load enough at 75-80 to make cagers move their empty heads!! What an interesting idea! Luc, I'm giving it a try. Until my allowance fills back up and I can get a 130+ db Stebel Compact Nautilus air horn, that is. =) eddie

I simply went down to AutoZone and bought a Blazer 132db euro horn. It's much louder with a nice tone (no more "meep meep"). It has a shield on it so the wind doesn't affect it and they cost around 20 bucks. I have this same horn on both of my bikes. If you want to get really creative with mounting, they have a dual Hi-Lo tone euro horn setup including a relay to give you some real honking power. They are a tad larger than the original, and I had to cut the plastic shield on my '09. even then it fits snugly against the cap of the coolant tank, so I paced a little piece of felt in there to stave off any vibration. The only downside is that I'd have to remove it to add coolant, but hopefully it won't be leaking so it's not that big of a deal to me. -Jeff Khoury

What's wrong with 6k from a $40 tire? Mine go almost 10k, but by then they are way past the wear bars. I buy CS858's locally, at Bob's Cycle Supply. They do some internet mail order; no idea what they might charge for shipping, but their tire prices are as good as anything I have read about. They don't stock them, so a guy might have to wait a couple of days.
