Just saw the latest about this on the web http://www.bikerlawblog.com/index.php/biker-laws/california+sb+435:> BTW, according to her website, Fran Pavley is a late 50ish granola eating earth mother living in Santa Monika, Kalif. [Non-text portions of this message have been removed]

I sure wouldn't want a cop having the final say on whether my bike was modified or not, but I am for any law that will put an end to obnoxious straight pipes on harleys. Rick A17

I think you will have a mini revolution if that happens. The Harley sound is a big attraction for Harley riders. I don't think they would cotton to Harley's sounding like a KLR. Criswell

Harleys can still sound nice with reasonably muffled exhaust. Straight pipes are illegal, and annoying. I know I sound like a cranky old fart, but it is just one thing I don't think is right. Rick A17

Yeah it is amazing what they get by with these days. When I was a kid and in High School, straight or loud pipes would get you a ticket. I know as I got a few. Criswell

This "loud pipes saves lives" crap HAS TO END!!! I see cage drivers oblivious to fire engines, police cars, etc (stereos up? cell phones?), so ... a loud Harley will alert them...? I don't think so. Anyone know why the 'cretins' with straight pipes have to ride around in a lower gear, wide open? Just venting.... Ed

I can see arguments for and against, and my evidence is purely anecdotal. Straight-piped Harleys are annoying, they remind me of rattling, polished 800-lb turds, but that's my personal view. My KLR is quiet... just the way I like it. However, my old sportbike has a Yoshimura on it and is fairly loud (not straight-pipe Harley loud - but you get the drift). To me it sounds like four-cylinder sweet, sweet music. When I'm lane sharing, I perceive that people notice me more on the sportbike more than they do on the KLR, and most move over to give me more room to pass. I don't want the government telling me what I can or cannot do to my bikes, but there is a point where a reasonable person would say "that's too loud". The difficulty is determining who that reasonable person is, and how to quantify the regulation to keep an individual officer's subjectivity from creeping in to the equation. On the flip side, some people will complain about anything and I hate indulging those people. I have one lady in my neighborhood that complains about the KLR with (virtually) stock exhaust. -Jeff Khoury

I'm just happy that I don't have to take my four 2000+ bikes down to some testing station where some bozo will stick a probe up the stock pipes just to tell me that my charcoal canisters/evaporative control systems are fine, and then charge me $80 for the privilege. With all the budget stupidity on the state's part, there is nothing I hate more than sending them any more of my money. ________________________________ From: Jeff Khoury To: fasteddiecopeman Cc: DSN KLR650 DSN_KLR650@yahoogroups.com> Sent: Thursday, June 4, 2009 10:56:38 AM Subject: Re: [DSN_KLR650] Re: Kalifornia KLR Smog checks.
