If I recall correctly the 190mm level is the corrected level for the KLR650 forks for pre 08 KLRs. And I've heard but haven't confirmed that the 08 and 09 KLR650s use 135mm for their forks. So pre 08 KLR650s use the 190mm level. Yes, the 170mm level was for KLR600s. Yes, the early edition manuals for the KLR650s says 190mm. HOWEVER... Somewhere around the 2003 printing the KLR650 manual lists 170mm as the correct level for all KLR650s so either the engineers decided 190mm was too low or it was a misprint in the earlier manuals. There are many many people using the earlier manuals so many will recommend 190mm but as I stated earlier the newer printing of the manuals say 170mm for all years of KLR650 (up to 2007 of course) and while many have used the 190mm figure with no ill affect those that use 170mm are happy with the result. My Clymers manual number M474 (cover top right corner) for KLR650 1987-2003 says 188-192 mm again on page 266, table 2. My factory service manual (basic) for '84 KLR600 say 170 +/- 2mm on page 11-4. The factory service manual (supplement) for '87-95 KLR650 and KLR500 say 190 +/- 2mm on page 11-4. My factory service manual (supplement) for 1987-2003 KLR650 and KLR500 says 190 +/- 2mm on page 11-4. Looking in section 17 of the most recent factory manual (supplement) I have (1987-2003) I don't see any reference to changing the spec for the forks. That doesn't mean it's not there but I didn't see it in my quick look. I'd sure appreciate it if you could provide a reference for the 170mm spec. I'd like to make sure I know what the factory is suggesting and don't have a factory manual newer than 2003. Thanks for your consideration.
