wind troubles

Post by Mike Hansen » Mon Mar 30, 2009 9:32 am

I travel from Las Vegas to Pacific Ocean often. The wind was terrible last night. blew me from my lane almost into the next. the Gust's of wind is what's hard to handle. Has anyone ever been blown over from wind ? I see tractor/trailers and rv's blown over yearly onlong that stretch of highway 15. I wonder when should I just stop my tavels and find shelter. last night was the worst yet. 100 ft visibility from dust and rocks hitting me from the wind gusts. -Mike- [Non-text portions of this message have been removed]

A friend on his ST 1100 (big heavy bike) riding in the Big Bend area of Texas was blown off the road into a road work equipment machine by bad cross winds while passing an RV . Luckily the bike absorbed most of the impact. Criswell

Sticking out a knee, as far as you can, in the direction the wind is coming from helps some. This always makes me think of Interstate 8 which I take to get to Tecate. Horrible wind and semi trucks; there s no parallel two lane so you have no choice. Bogdan [Non-text portions of this message have been removed]

I have made it through radical wind gusts no problem on my KLR. On the way up to Buelton, CA on the 101 and near Palm Springs, CA where those windmill farms are. But, I had a mostly full tank both times and sheer weight of the KLR got me through. I also moved forward on the seat and ducked behind the tiny stock windshield to put more weight on the front wheel. Jeffrey

In October 2004 I left in the morning from St Louis on I- state 40 on an ST1100 loaded with a large bag on the luggage rack and a small tank bag. Around Albuquerque and all the way to Flagstaff, AZ the south winds got worse and I later learned were solid at 30 and gusting to 50. This was not a pleasant ride and I packed it in for the day at Flagstaff. Rain had gotten added to the misery. Observations: When you have a lane to yourself you can handle the gusting. In a southerly wind, if you're westbound the big rigs and the RVs are in the No2 lane and you won't have to deal with riding through their wind shadow that gives you a 2 rapid reversal of side forces in less than 1 sec. (depending on your speed.) When you're traveling eastbound you must deal with passing through the wind shadows every time you pass an 18 wheeler or an RV and then it's just anticipate the hole before you enter the shadow and be as far away as your lane allows 'cause you'll dive toward the truck then in that 1 sec you'll get hit with not only the prevailing side wind but the additive effect of the 18 wheeler's "bow wave" at that point you need to have already prepared for the 'hit' you'll take and the sideways move that will happen. If one adds rain and darkness to the last picture you have to make those moves blind as you will not be able to see as you enter the trucks 'rooster tail' of spray as well as the 'bow wave' as you leave. It's time to get off the highway. It's not fun. Challenging? Oh yes, so is Russian roulette, but also foolish and dangerous. From Experience Lee

YES a 2001 KLR with over 35000. miles !! This green machine is a wonderful bike. Takes me to places most people will never see. I ride 1300 mile round trips just to get away for the weekend. Go to San Francisco, Pismo Beach and San Diego. Utah Maob and Reno NV. Just for the Journey !! I love the freedom that the KLR brought into my life !!!!!! I travel less used roads and i'm always looking for side routes or powerline roads. Its an adventure daily when you own and Ride a KLR : ) ----- Forwarded Message ---- From: nakedwaterskier To: DSN_KLR650@yahoogroups.com Sent: Tuesday, March 31, 2009 6:05:30 AM Subject: [DSN_KLR650] Wind Troubles Wind Troubles I travel from Las Vegas to Pacific Ocean often You do it on a KLR? Dream ride! Out past Red Rock Canyon, Pahrump, drop down through Death Valley, 190 to Olancha, up over the Sierras via Johnsondale (if it's open), cross the SJ Valley and pick up your favorite road, and 10-11 hours later, there's the Pacific! Alternate route, farther south: Ridgecrest, Lake Isabella, into the valley at Bakersfield, lots of good roads on the coast range from there, too.Shorter across the valley at the south end. I wouldn't do the trip regularly on a KLR, though, if all I was doing was running on I-15. nakedwaterskier wrote:
