well the saying goes there are two types of motorcycle riders, those
that have laid a bike down, and those that WILL lay one down
I've owned and worn several pieces from Joe Rocket, MSR, Tekinc and
Motoboss and boots from Sidi and AlpineStar; I won't ride without a
jacket (heavy cordura nylon, kevlar stictching, CE approved armor
etc.) and on all but the hottest days, I wear nylon pants as well..
and ALWAYS, ALWAYS gloves and boots..
It just so happens I'm selling some extra gear (on ebay); just go to
ebay and do a seller search on hc147 if your interested

First-Gear Trekker and JR Ballistic 4.0 pants held up without a
scratch in a bonehead move I made recently. Only doing about 15 or so
I would guess, but not even a scuff mark.
I really like the Ballistic pants as overpants too, very easy to get
on right over jeans and boots, so far they seem waterproof too, but I
haven't blasted them in the wet on the freeway yet.

While folks have their own brand preference, for the road I think a full face
helmet /w eye protection, good gloves, a boot that provides good ankle
support, a riding jacket - preferably one with CE approved body armor (CE has
mandanted pads that cover the forearm and elbows, shoulder, shoulder blades and
back).
To be honest, you should wear some sort of riding pant. My commute never
leaves city limits so I accept the risk from wearing levis. But by next summer I
plan to have figured out what will work for lower body protection while
allowing me to strap on a CTI brace (the left knee has been rebuilt twice so the knee
brace is more important) for weekend riding. I'm looking at some EVC padded
shorts and LBZ baggies.
Its good to hear from someone smart enough to learn from others. In my thirty
plus years of riding I would the following to be true. When it comes to folks
that play with their motorcycles in the dirt almost 100% of them believe in
using protective gear. When it comes to folks that have only ever ridden
pavement that figure drops to about 1 in 3 or 1 in 4. The only thing I can figure is
folks that play in the dirt understand that you can fall down.

Summer is near and in Vegas we get temps upwards of 115F. My Jacket may just be too hot to wear !! I have been looking at option for summer protection. Anyone have suggestions for upper body gear. protection from wind fatique and chest/back protection for the Dirt Trails.

Gets hot here in the OKC metro area as well. Best thing I've found for summer protection is one of the Star Wars Storm Trooper outfits. Widely available on the internet in a variety of sizes. The hard shell construction gives good skid protection, the segmented design provides lots of air flow between the panels, and the bright white serves both as both heat reflective during the day and headlight reflection for night riding. Some days around town I use the storm trooper helmet, for longer distances an old white Simpson looks really good. While it might go unnoticed in Vegas, around here the sight of a storm trooper on a KLR stops kids dead in their tracks, and even turns the head of the occasional nerd-chick. An added benefit is bug splatters come off easily with a bit of Lemon Pledge.

Go to Cycle Gear or similar store near you and try on a bunch of different chest protectors. Buy the one that fits you best without any restriction of movement. Buy elbow pads as well. (Alternatively buy one of the one-piece upper body pretectors that incorporate hard plastic and cushy foam with a mesh fabric) Then use any old rain jacket for your wind/weather protection as needed. I used to commute to work while in NYC in the summer wearing moto armor. One bus driver asked me if I thought I was a superhero, to which I replied, "Why, is something the matter?"\

I've got a Joe Rocket mesh jacket but what I really like is some mesh
pants made by Olympia Moto Sports with knee and hip protection but
also the pants can be made into shorts by unzipping them. They
really work good in a hot climate and are very corfortable.

six-six-one body wear is on sell at cycle gear for around $70.00. This is the core suit only.

Mesh jackets are definetly the best solution to hot weather riding. I have an AlpineStars mesh that works well and is comfortable. The problem I run into is when touring. Packing the mesh jacket is not practical. After a lot of research, I just bought a Tour Master Transition II jacket. It has lots of vents and a unique system to hold the vents open. They also come in silver which is a good reflector. $170 from NewEnough and $2 shipping. Lots of positive reviews on that jacket.
