Fantastic! It's not the bike, it's the rider, eh! Chris husabob wrote:

Post by sylvain gilbert » Tue Jan 20, 2009 12:34 pm

I'm considering purchasing a reusable SS oil filter and would like feedback from any KLR owner that have experience with it or general comment. Thanks in advance Sylvain 1972 Honda SL70 1976 Honda XL100 1977 CanAm 175 Qualifier 1982 Honda CT70 2000 Suzuki GSX1300R Hayabusa turbo 2008 KLR

<><><><><><><><><> <><><><><><><><><> Sylvain, I don't have one, have never touched one but do have a couple of comments since you asked. : ) From what I've read about them and heard from people that use them they work well. Cleaning seems pretty easy if you have a place to clean the filter. I see a couple of downsides for my use. I don't want to try to clean one on the road when traveling. I'm not sure this is a really valid argument since I am willing to go 5,000 plus smiles on a filter without changing it. I do change my oil around the 1,750 smile mark based on oil analysis results on my bike and my riding conditions. Cost is pretty high and if I recall correctly it would take something like 75,000 smiles before you'd start saving money using it. Last, I think if a guy was to find a tear in the filter screen it could really slow down an oil change. If you had a replaceable filter you could get back on the road quickly. But why would a guy have a spare filter since you were expecting the reusable filter to be used again and again and again? If I only rode locally and expected my KLR to be with me for 20 years or 100,000 smiles I might consider one. In the meantime I'll stay with EMGO filters for about $2.50 each through my local independent dealer and change them every 1,750 to 5,000 or so smiles. If you get one I'm interested in hearing you initial evaluation and later evaluations after cleaning it.
