what is this random tube from the battery area?

Hi Folks, I looked around the web to try and find a "helmet color" comparison for best visibility to drivers, and did not find much. So I edited some images by putting 6 different "colors of helmets" over the riders helmet area in identical images - to compare them. The colors are: white, silver, yellow, black, red and blue. Here's a link to the file with the 6 colored superimposed "helmets" in different riding scenarios. http://www.ithelponcall.com/helmet-color.pdf I think yellow shows up the strongest to me. The silver really blends in in to the different settings! Any advice on helmet visibility and accident rates, or any links to real helmet color studies would be welcome! I think that yellow stands out very well but Kawasaki green is a close second and is much more pleasing to the eye. My KLX250S is Kawi green and people actually SEE IT! I also wear a Kawi Green jacket and they see that too. IMO flat black is the worst of all colors for visibility and although it's very popular lately I wouldn't get caught dead in it... $bob$ I think yellow shows up the strongest to me. My jacket was BRIGHT YELLOW, as the size of the helmet is too small to be seen by anyone no matter what color it it! I did had some stickers to my helmet that were bright yellow. BTW, I have studied human interface design in regards to computers which also flows over into advertising and general color schemes for marketing! BIG and YELLLOW! Now RED is also a color that quite a few folks pick up on also,but a RED bike does not cut it as it blends in with the surroundings! Best, bright yellow jacket and yellow pants, if you cold find them, you may look gay in the outfit but you might have a better chance being seen. Hate to say this but noise also affects, we always know there is a Harley asshole with open pipe somewhere near ya!

Reflective Tape helps.. Years (many) ago, after I completed a MSF course I was given a completion decal, it was reflective and triangle shaped, put it on my helmet and never thought about it, I was young. The other day driving through construction (its everywhere in Chicago) and my headlights light up a moving reflector ahead of me to my left.. look that way and couple lanes over up front is a bike, helmet on even with the same decal, now remember this is a morning commute bumper to bumper basically like a TrashCar race on these tollways. What caught my attention.. yup that reflector. Did that to my truck, kinda redneck style, but I drive alot on remote highways through Wisconson and Upper Michigan, normally late at night getting somewhere, and got tired of idiots and bright lights behind me, so I noted a semi-trailer with reflectors, ding ding ding Idea... put a strip of good scotch 2" tape up the sides and across the top of the cab back window. Basically pointing backwards, so when they come up on me with brights, at least I am am giving them a hint they are on. Have a Roll of the super reflective stuff now debating running it across the bumper and tailgate also. Laws of Gross Tonnage are always in effect !! on a bike be seen or be carried away. Ahh hell .... the more visible you are, the more you are a target. Sometimes I think they are out to get us intentionally ..... or just don't care. My wife was riding in a car with the crotchety old owner (85 years old) of the company she works for when he almost hit a bike rider. My wife asked if he saw him? Yes he replied, "I see the little bastard." Watch your back your front and your sides and don't ride at night. A sport bike rider was killed not 3 miles from my house on the freeway Monday riding at 1:30 AM. He hit a car with its lights off left in the middle of the freeway by a drunk. I wear either (1) a commercial-grade reflective vest such as road crews wear or (2) anything that is hunter-orange. I suppose I might look silly, but I look silly to people while they are still a couple hundred yards away from me. I picked this up in a bicycle magazine. Good old white is tops. You gotta believe that safety yellow would be up there too. Silver just plain blends. I have strips of reflective safety tape, in a diamond pattern, on my helmet.

That's fun! Thanks. Yellow is a good color, day or night. International Orange might be even better (the color used for liferafts, etc.). The yellow/green color popular now is also good day or night. Check out http://www.highviz.org/ for a lot of information about motorcycle visibility. The reflective stickers they have handed out are the bomb! I put strips of it along the edges of the luggage rack on the KLR, and my son made a checkerboard stripe across his helmet with one inch squares of the stuff.
