playing cards in your spokes vs nerf bars
KLRistas,
Seems to me that rather than buying a "custom" exhaust that does little more
than make your KLR louder and subject to ticketing by overzealous forest
rangers etal, you could using playing cards in your spokes ($1-$2 cost) to
give you that "Harley Sound" and spend your money on something more suited
for a KLR and what it does best.

Anyone have any experience with these "Nerf Bars" or have another type that
might be better?
I'm riding my KLR more and more in the National Forest here in north Florida
and it is spending more time on it's side *COUGH* than it used to...

Bob, I have the Happy Trail bars for the 08 and they've saved my K from untold ugliness. My friend has the '07 bars you were looking at and they appear to cover more than the '08 bars. I dropped mine seven times on loose rock here in VA a few weeks ago and recieved no damage or scratches to any part of the front (rear panels were unprotected and have quite a few gouges in them now). Be aware that they aren't going to protect everything... I broke a clutch lever, have no peg feelers left and also killed one of the highway pegs on the lower Happy Trail crash guard. All minor and cheap items. Fairing bits and gas tank are still like new thanks to the bars.> http://www.happy-trail.com/ProductInfo.aspx?productid=HTP%204-1-5B > Anyone have any experience with these "Nerf Bars" or have another type that > might be better?

I don't know about the '08, but on the earlier models, if you're using any kind of highway pegs (including the HT lower guard/pegs) you want to be carrying at least one spare front motor mount -- better, a pair of them. If you go down hard directly on the highway peg, it *will* bend your front motor mount, causing the bolt to keep coming loose, vibration and other nastiness. I've seen three KLRs where this had happened and the owner didn't realize the actual cause of the strange behavior... The front motor mounts are cheap but KHI is often out of stock so buy some when you put the highway pegs/crash bars on. And just feel lucky they bend and not the frame!> > Be aware that they aren't going to protect everything... I have these bars on my '04 KLR. I like them. Last week while out in the Big Horn Mountains of Wyoming I hit a rut and was immediately flat on my right side hard enough to draw blood on my leg. The bars didn't even bend.
Now if I could only find bars for my legs.

Bob - Several people carry nerf bars. Personally, it's one of the
cheapest and best value-adding items on my list. Countless drops and
I've even seen 10-ft-in-the-air let-goes off rock/sand hills where
the bars saved the day. Combo the bars with the 7 gal tank and kiss
breaking, scratching or otherwise destroying things bu-bye. I really
like and highly recommend them. I believe mine came from Happy
Trails.
One improvement I made to the bars was welding bigger flanges on the
top. Then I ran one single bolt through the frame connecting both
flanges (similar to the sub-frame upgrade) making it stronger and
easier to dis/assemble.

I agree since that s what I did. Tank bag users be informed, however, that the tank vents from the top of the cap, dirt bike fashion. I inserted a metal tube that turns and vents horizontally before joining the rubber line-not brain surgery. Pictures? Or better yet, a link to your pics? I've been looking at
getting one of the available nerf bars/roll cages (as it were) instead
of the individual guards for the radiator & pump that are available from
Dual Star. Which one of these do people have, and what kind of
experience have you had with either?

or

Which is better, and does either interfere with doing maintenance on the
bike/engine?
Thanks for the input,
