36k since my last valve adjustment

Post by Jud Jones » Mon Jul 21, 2008 4:32 pm

Can you say 'deferred maintenance'? You don't have to read this; just file it away as a data point for the proposition that the KLR's valve clearances are pretty stable once they have bedded in. My bike was not really showing symptoms. It started well and the idle was stable. It had stalled a couple of times on the overrun; that combined with the fact that I last set the valves at 5k and the odo now shows 41k told me it was probably time to check the valve lash. The intakes were both at .006. I had long since mislaid my of my old valve settings, but they obviously had not moved much. The figures .007 and .008 stuck in my memory, but I could have been mistaken. I left them alone. The left exhaust showed .006 with a 230. I replaced that with a 220 and brought it right out to the max. The right exhaust showed no clearance with a 250. I tried a 210 and was able to fit a .014 blade. Something was obviously amiss. Perhaps the cam cap hadn't seated, but it looked right and didn't seem to want to budge. I removed the caps again and tried a .220. The clearance was now under .006. I should have trusted my math. Back in went the 210. The cap did look better this time and the clearance was a tight .011, Close enough. I'll give them another look at around 75,000 miles. ;-{> While I was at it, I put in a fresh plug. The electrode on the old one had eroded considerably. AFAIK, it was the original plug; for sure it had been in there since I bought the bike with 4000 miles on it.

Hey Jud, Somewhere in the archives is an old post from me, with basically the same findings, that over a 15-20Kmile valve adjustment interval only one valve was needing adjustment. That would have been my 1990 which was retired in 2002 i believe. Conall '93, '95 KLR

36k since my last valve adjustment

I, too am letting my valve adjustment go. It was set at the max or min, in fact, a lttle outside rec'd...whatever, so that it can go the max miles before next adjustment. That was at about 18,000 miles. Now I have 23000 miles. My next valve check/adjustment will be at 30,000. I bothered checking my Eagle Mike doohickey and spring and that was fine...Time to be more concerned about me than my KLR. Over and out, Jeffrey

Hi, Conall. Long time. Yes, I think I vaguely remember that. I certainly have read something like it somewhere.

One of the forums on ADVrider talked about a John Deere owner's manual holder that sold for $4 at your local tractor outlet. I don't know the dimensions, but it's O-ring sealed and comes with mounting brackets. Others talk about welding rod holders you can by at H-D.
