The ABRIDGED VERSION.
Today was primo.
89.5 (indicated) miles chasing my 12.5 y/0 son on an xr100R with a
KLR650. It was a personal 'record' for him. ~60 miles was the
previous mark.
When I wasn't looking, he tried on the KLR for size while it was on
the kickstand. Equipped with a dip-Corbin seat, he can almost touch
the ground as 'well' as the rest of us do with a std. seat.
He has fallen right into my trap.
and
earlier last week, my slightly reluctant 10 y/o daughter roosted me
with her xr70 while chasing her around the mx track....
She told her my wife later that evening,
"I'm the only kid in my class with a dirt bike,
and the only GIRL in the school that mx's."
I got her jump-started on the bike again with a 'pink' helmet for her
birthday. shrug. yeah, shameless.
ah, built-in dirt bike companions for a few short years ahead.
revmaaatin.
PS and even earlier last week, my rear tire 'found' a used fencing
staple, slicing, dicing and shredding the UHD tube. ~26000 KLR miles
without a flat--glad it happened close to home.

seems i recall a certain someone the last week or so boasting about
no flats in such in such thousands of miles. i'm not sure if that
falls under kharma, pride as a sin, murphys law or just dumb luck.
any thoughts??

You are living the good life Rev....
It is a wonderful thing to find something that you and your children
enjoy, especially daughters...
They move away too too soon and go off to have their own adventures.

Been riding Glendora Ridge between Mt. Baldy Village and Azusa Cyn
this week after work, trying to regain confidence in the grip the KLR
has to offer after a recent drop. Running a Scorpion A/T front and a
flat-top Kenda rear, soon to be replaced with an IRC GP-1, unless
someone talks me out of it. Pic here:

Probably over 300 corners in about 24 miles of mostly sub-35mph
twisties. I never get tired of this road and thankfully it's not too
far from home. The KLR eats this stuff up too, with good rubber.
Couple of weeks ago I slipped in some gutter water and went down hard
on my left knee while doing some commuting. I was only going about
10mph but it still hurts and the knee may never be the same again.
Makes a case for wearing knee and shin armor ALL THE TIME. I was glad
to have the Factory 909 handguards too or might have broken some
fingers. It happened so fast I never had a chance to get a foot down
or let go of the bars. The soft handlebars bent and the left rear
blinker was smashed but I was able to pick the KLR up and ride it
home. Wish I had used the correct method of picking the bike up
because the lower back is now out as well as the knee. Getting old
sucks...

Sure I just grab the sucker and put er on the rack. Heck what's it weight 425lbs or so. No problem. Yeah right. LOL No I use a plank to roll er up. This on is home built pretty stout carrier. If ya want some closeups I can send some along if you may be interested in makein one. I have used it for years for my XT350 but it sure doesn't have the weight of the KLR as you know. This was the first time out with the KLR on it. The trip was about 375 miles each way. No problems at all. I am considering takeing the KLR to Florida this winter on hitch I had welded to the back of my fifthwheel. Not sure about that one yet. Sure would be nice to have the 650 rather than the 350 but I'll take what I can get.> about these carriers and the KLR as the weight as so > much..................... >

Where were all those beautiful Shay locomotives lined up in the last 2 pix? Trains are also passion of mine, I like to ride the abandoned (for now) rail line that goes through my town. Used to chase trains up the Cuesta Grade outside San Luis Obispo, CA. on my '73 SL350 when I was in college. They still had cabooses then and the brakeman/conductor would be shaking his fist at me as I followed through tunnels and over trestles.

The locos were in Cass W.Va. They have a pretty nice setup there with
restoration shops. We were allowed to just wonder a bit around the
yard. Of coures we kept pretty clear of the equipment and stayed out
of the way. Very cool stuff. They had two engines with steam up
ready to run and about three or four on the side with fire in the
boxes. They have a five hour ride and I think they even have a dinner
run. Don't know though but I would guess they have a web site.

Amen to the knee protectors. Stupid thing about it is, when I went down the knee and shin guards I already own were sitting in the garage. I had been wearing them off road, or on long trips only. When the weather got hot I stopped wearing them. It's still hard to put them on for the morning commute which is only 5 miles but that's just no excuse.
All The Gear ALL The Time - it's such a PITA, but so is being injured...
