sit - n - miss help !

Hi All, I am only riding my KLR every two months or so. I know, shame on me, I am a bad man. Anyway, when started it up today, it will not idle, it dies if it gets below 1000 RPM. I have to hold the throttle open to about 2-3K to keep it purring. Speaking of purring, it has a backfire when I decelerate. I should add that I live in New Orleans, hot and humid, and my KLR sits outside under a cover. Anyone have a clue on what the problem might be? My guess is that the fuel is bad? I just ran to the gas station refueled the beastie. And, I am going to ride it a bit to night to see if that helps. In the future, should I add some Stabil (phonetic spelling) to help the fuel? What else should I check and do! -And NO I am not going to sell it because I only ride every 2 months or so! Any help would be greatly appreciated! Eddie (03' KLR - "la podorosa")

Drain the water out of the float bowl, as well as the old bad gas and other crap that's built up there 'cause you're not ridin' like you should. -E

I had the same problem before. Carb cleaner (fuel additive) and a couple rides/days (patience) resolved the problem. When I don't ride much I use stabilizer. BTW, I think spec. idle is 1200 RPM. ED

is your airfilter clean? had the same symptoms after cleaning and re-oiling my K and N. turns out you can over oil it. blew out excess oil with light pressure from air compressor and viola. runs like a champ again. klrdar --- In DSN_KLR650@yahoogroups.com, "eddiebmauri" wrote:

If a carb cleaner added to a tank of gas doesn't take care of the backfire on engine deceleration, the decel diaphragm in your carb (sits under a cap on the left side, as I recall) may have failed. Glenn San Jose, CA

I also find that when I have my idle speed set wrong (don't recall whether it was too fast or too slow) that my KLR will backfire upon decel if I let off the throttle all the way.

Sorry Charlie.... Sta-bil is best used still on the store shelve, read the SeaFom can, I know it sounds like snake oil, but notice it says fuel stabilizer on it. I use SeaFoam in my lawnmower, snowthrower, powerwasher, KLR, lawn tractor, CamaroRS and my truck, even add it to my fuel cans if I know they might be sitting for a while unused like at camp. Dork at work was complaining about various costs he was quoted to tune up his new (used) fuel injected car, had a slight miss so he claimed, told him to stop on his way home buy a can of Seafoam, mix as directed and drive the thing, by the next morning he said that slight miss and the rough idle that went with it had cleared up and it was running smooth. No I am not associated with the product other than afirm believer of it. Dooden A15 Green Ape

4.60 vs. 5.10 tire

Post by kusstj » Thu Jul 03, 2008 4:36 pm

Indeed the tall and top heavy KLR650 is a bit wicked in the sand, and thus outfitting it with some better off road tires pays big dividends. To go with the knobbies I also picked up a Kenda 270 (in the 4.6 size) real cheap off of ebay and since it was just a highway tire where I wasn't worried about traction, I bought it. After putting it on I thought it looked a bit silly. It tends to make the bike look like at 250cc. But anyhoo it does work fine, it lowers the bike a bit and also lowers the gearing (since a revolution on a smaller profile is a smaller distance with this tire.) The torque and acceleration do feel improved, but the top end is less. Not a problem though unless you want to break 100mph. all in all I wouldn't recommend the 4.60 size unless you are looking for a specific effect. I will stick with the 5.10 size from now on as it looks like it belongs there. Todd in Chaska MN
