I saw and fixed fried wiring on bass boats that were welded on
because the welder (person) attached the ground to the tansom and
then walked around welding things. As he moved towards the bow,
circuits were made back through the wiring to the ground clamp and
the current "smoked" all of the wiring along that path, and only that
path.
If you keep the ground clamp on the side stand shaft and lay
the "BigFoot" in the floor around the OEM foot and weld, you should
be OK (personal experience). You'll have to spray paint the side
stand shaft & foot anyway so make your ground connect as close as
possible to the foot.

Steve,
Just how many seconds of heat did you apply to that cylinder?
Have you tried it on a 2d bike to repeat the results?
You didn't count that as a farkle did you?
I hope not!

All this discussion about side stands has caused me to find the time to cut mine off. I had shortened the rear hight by one inch and the bike needed to lean over a bit more for stability. The job was much easier than I thought it would be. Took about 15 minutes.
I tied the stand to the frame where the sawsall could cut it. Sawed about 5/8 inch from the bottom, keeping the angle the same as the bottom plate. Then I put it on a vice and cut the rest off as close to the bottom plate as possible, and used the grinder to finish. Then l tacked it on with a wire welder. I had previously made an aluminum plate (3/16) to bolt on the bottom so it would have a bigger foot print, so I bolted that on and tried it out. It was perfect, so I finished welding it right on the bike--no problems. Painted it and looks good. If anyone wants a pic showing the aluminum plate I'll send one.
