short in 2008 wiring? dear god help me!

Post by matteeanne@yahoo.com » Mon Jun 02, 2008 9:07 pm

Ive blown 11ea 20 amp fuses (The main fuse). Not sure at all where the problem lies? Any one heard of any regular electrical failures in the 08? Ive added about 2lbs of electrical tape trying to isolate it. spent 40 or more hours so far, I'll get it running it goes for a week, and then bam. I am at the end of my rope. If I remove the main fuse holder from it's carrier (Inside the side stand kill switch box) it seems to stay on, but when I button it back up and try to start it, blam blown fuse. I knew I should have stuck with the 04! Damnit! Someone save me arrgghhhhhhh! My KLR has now been in the back of three pickups, its embarrasing. 2008, still under warranty? Not heard of this issue and would have it back at the dealer if still under warranty, if not, just buy another one and use this one for parts?

Went riding with a guy on a 2008, he popped the main fuse twice in quick succession (his were 15 amp fuses), I grabbed the wiring and pulled on it, then we threw a 20 amp fuse in there and it held the rest of the ride... (Onion Creek, if anyone cares). So, you are not alone. I don't own an 08, but my wild stab in the dark guess is that the fuse block is somehow shorting out on the frame? Is this possible? We saw this riding with a 2008 at Moab. He popped two main fuses in a row, and then the third one held. We didn't have a chance to troubleshoot further on the trail, but the bike survived for the rest of the (120-mile) day. Chris -- J. automatic resetting circuit breakers that fit right in the blade type fuseholder are avail. at auto part stores...in fact, I have one instead of my main fuse...never actually triggered but it is just 1 less thing i have to worry about when riding. the only short...actually an open...i had on my 04 was blinker wire broke inside the wire insulation near the gooseneck but, an 08 should still be under warranty Jeffrey

Sean, if it is an 08, why are you working on it? Let the dealer fix it under warranty. If you have installed any electrical accessories before this happened I'd go back to them and do some checking. If you have installed anything where you drilled any holes near wires, check them, or any accessories near wiring that my have pressed into them. Mike H. Good luck, another 08 rider..

I'm off to Juarez this weekend, for my first, and long awaited, moto trip south for this year.  According to the news, many people got shot last week. I will keep going.  Great KLR urban roads.  Good food!  Fun!  Also fun on a bicycle.  Robert Hedrick Albuquerque, NM

There is a war going on down there with rival cartels, police and the Mexican Army. People are getting killed on a regular basis and it is no longer limited to just Mexicans. Look at what just happened with the helicopter crashing during the last Baja 1000. 50 armed men with machine guns went to battle with the morgue and police in Ensenada to take the bodies. A long time driver of one of the race teams had his family robbed by people in Mexican police vehicles and were left in a remote area with out a vehicle or their rig. I love baja but will not go back.
