coolant question

I'm thinking of running some "water Wetter" in my rad. Used it in other water cooled bikes. Someone suggested "Engine Ice", says it lowers engine temps by up to 70 degrees. Anyone used this product on a KLR? Dave

I use water wetter mixed with the stock coolant. Certainly doesn't hurt, and I've never had overheating problems, even riding tight single-track in 100 deg heat. Devon "daveel2002 " wrote:

I'd thought about it, but decided against it. Right now, engine temp in the garage is about 35-40 degree's. Adding the "ice" would bring the engine temp to what, -30, -40 degrees, then turning the entire block into a large block of ice, probably even cracking the radiator, cylinder. No thanks, maybe the next time I'm in Moab and the temp is 116. Would make a nice thing to lean against while setting in the shade. millerized Saturday, working, cold outside. Not a good day. --- In DSN_klr650@yahoogroups.com, "daveel2002 " wrote:

Anyone have a manual handy and can tell me how much coolant a 98 KLR holds? Seem to remember 1.5 or something close. And I'm assuming thats 1.xL total of 1/2 coolant 1/2 water right? Want to run up to the cycle shop and get a bottle so I can do a coolant flush over the holidays. thanks, jim

I've always just filled the radiator up to the neck and topped up the coolant reservoir. As long as you add the coolant slowly to let the air escape, you shouldn't have a problem... The KLR cooling system seems to flush and fill very easily, unlike my Connie which took forever to get all the air out of. Z DC A5X A12X

Yesterday my 87 KLR (32 000 miles) overheated a bit on a hill . I let it cool while having a BBQ with some friends and went back home without any problem just noticing the temp a bit higher than usual but below red line. Today I checked the coolant in the white plastic tank and it was over the max limit. but when I checked the radiator ,I could not see any coolant I filled it up and run the bike for a while and noticed that some coolant drips on the back of the bike coming from the little hose connected to the top of the radiator just after I turned off the engine. I changed the oil and did not see any water in it ,and did not see any oil in the coolant I am going to monitor the coolant level and temp , Did anyone have an idea of the source of this problem? Jean Luc, The small hose likely is cracked near the radiator. The coolant expands as the engine warms up, and a little bit goes into the reservoir. When the engine cools down after you stop, the coolant in the engine contracts and the little hose acts like a siphon to return coolant to the radiator. If the hose is cracked, then air gets into the hose and no coolant returns to the radiator. Subsequent trips force a little more coolant into the reservoir until the reservoir is full and the radiator is low on coolant. Then you get an overheat condition. There may be enough length of the small hose to allow you to cut off a bit and reattach it to the radiator for a temporary repair. But the rubber is age-hardened and should be replaced. I would be all over that if I had a way to get them back to Indiana. D --- In DSN_KLR650@yahoogroups.com, "John Biccum" wrote:
