why no answers??

Post by hardyreels » Wed Apr 09, 2008 4:52 pm

I used to post questions here regarding KLR stuff. Now when I post a QUESTION no one answers it. Not only that, my last post regarding wind shields turbulence and gas mileage didn't even draw a comment? Duh People are writing about riding their bikes in water deeper than the seat height and bantering on about it but no one wants to engage in a discussion on gas mileage?? Hopefully everyone wont get miffed about my complaint. If you check last weeks post you'll find my inquiry. Thanks

It happens sometimes, especially when the list isn't getting much traffic. Why don't you state your question again. Alan A13 Iowa hardyreels wrote:

<><><><><><><><><><> <><><><><><><><><><> Hardyreels, I'm not miffed but didn't have anything worth adding to your post I'm guessing. I don't even remember it. I don't use a windshield so have only a few miles on a KLR with a windshield. My suggestion is to remove it. I use a 14 or 16 tooth front and a 46 tooth rear so that probably won't help you much with you fuel economy question. But using a 14/46 combo for the last 18+ months I've been getting between 49 and 53 mpg depending on where and how I'm riding. My more spirited riding in the hills here this winter tends to keep the mpg a bit lower. I've noticed list traffic has slowed down a lot. Maybe more folks are finally able to get out and ride and spend less time in front of the computer. Hi Hardy....in my case at least I wasn't ignoring, just gas mileage is so dependent on how and were you ride that I find it something that I only pay attention to if it seems to suddenly get worse...for converstion sake I did a couple of times get 68mpg, imperial gallons not the us varity, while riding with guys that ride crusiers, I now understand where the gendre got it's name, in some language cruiser must mean "ride slow on straights and drag parts in corners", ...and as a rule I would guess I probably get a few less when I ride the way I normally do, range seems to be if I remember right about 420 kilometers to a tank which always seems to take again if I remember right 18.8 litres. Offroad it doesn't seem to change much, probably because a lot of throttle and revs just amplify the lack of suspension. I did read a post, maybe yours that mentioned an exhaust dyno and measuring unburnt octane in the exhaust but I can't comment or add anything constructive since any dyno I've ever seen or read about measured hp and torque which might be enhanced by a less restrictive exhaust. As far as I know octane is a rating that is given to gas which indicates the quality of the gas and how quickly it burns and resists detonation, probably way over simplified, but anyway I don't know how you could measure octane in the exhaust unless of course your exhaust contained raw unburnt fuel. From a windshield point of view, mine is stock and fine as long as I wear ear plugs which I do anyway and and anything bigger would be a pain off road, it is a dual sport after all and I probably spend about 1/3 of my miles there. I guess even though we all seem to ride the same bike we all have different interests and I guess ways that we use out bikes, I personally like to read the techy/mods sort of post as well as the places that others have ridden, the latest pics that were posted taken around the Dewey Bridge that recently burnt were amazing and are in country that chances are reasonably good that I will at least in the short term get to ride in, come to think about it I never posted on these either, from an outsider, always sad when something that can't be replaced disappears especially because of stupidy, sorry for the loss to Fred and the others that it was so important to, but wow what amazing country. Anyway post is getting way to long so have a great evening....Greg hardyreels wrote: I used to post questions here regarding KLR stuff. Now when I post a QUESTION no one answers it. Hardy, don't feel bad, sometimes it happens that no one has anything specific to say about your question. Regarding the KLR and windshields and gas mileage, in my opinion, nothing you could do windshield-wise could make the KLR get bad mileage, but it might have a minor effect. you're still going to come in around 50 mpg. give or take, thus do what you like. I went with a cee baily shield which was about 4" over stock. I like it, seems to block a bit more wind yet doesn't feel like it is out of place if I ride through the woods. Let me apologize now if this isn't very relevant to your question. I never did find the posting. best of luck, Todd in Chaska, who actually does like oil threads. do you wanna hear about the recent synthetic blend I tried?? wow! the bike runs great!

Capt. 1. After a week, politely ask the question again. The board is a voluntary organization, not a mandatory one. 2. Suggesting someone else look for your question, won't get it answered; politely ask the question again. and... 3. Using the P & M method will get you some attention, but it might get you a KLR-moderator 'time-out'. Or worse--someone will think you are a poser; politely ask the question again. smile. 4. Silence to your request indicates that no one who read had an answer; politely ask the question again. I saw your post. I didn't answer, shrug. I don't have a windshield. At all. Haven't used one for four years. Most likely won't use one for the next 4 years. shrug. I didn't' have an answer. As far as gas mileage, when rode side by side 4 other bikes, my bike took more gas, every time...and some of those hoss's were a full 50 lbs bigger than me. shrug. So,to speak--I don't get 'gas mileage' either. I didn't have an answer. However, I do have an answer for today's missive. IRT to folks not answering-- Not all 8000 read the KLR board all the time, many infrequently, some less than that. I am guessing (=swag), that there is only about 200+ 'faithful', some 50 or less that equivocate and pontificate at any particular point in time. And a few so addicted that they go through withdrawals--mood swings--to the point they fall down in parking lots--when they are not able to see/read/hear what their friends are up to on a daily basis. I'll let you decide which one is you...or me... cough. revmaaatin.

<><><><><><><> <><><><><><><> Mark, Try not touching the throttle when you push the starter button and let us know if that makes it better. Is this a stock KLR or have you done something to it?
