Hi Jake;
I was motorcycle camping in Death Valley some years ago when I met two guys who were on a 'Round The World ride on their BMW GSs. Each day they would pack up their gear and take it all over the valley with them while I was leaving my tent and all my gear. I asked them why they did that and they said the same thing you have said. In every country they went to, you did not dare to leave anything whatsoever out. If you walked out of sight of it for just a few minutes, it would be gone, guaranteed.
I have camped for 25 years or so in several states here in the US and I have only had one time where people took something. We came back to camp one evening, having been gone all day, to find our chairs in another camp site under someone else's butts. I walked right over and demanded them back and they gave them back with no argument. Other than that, never any problems.
I do love my country;

(nklr) theft as a way of life
I always camp in BF-Egypt and tend to leave things in camp when out exploring. I believe that "bad" people tend to hang out in areas with lots of other people, ie: campgrounds. (Typical Sociopathic tendency is need for attention)
Never had an issue but at times I do worry about it.

The moral condition of mankind is in a terrible state.
I was always surprised when I visited your country at
the lack of what we call normal safety precautions,
like fences, bars, and the like.
It takes a thief here only 20 seconds to open your
locked car. Parking lots with guards are big
bussiness here, charging one dollar an hour, and
people are most willing to pay. I live behind a
concrete wall with three rotweilers. Jake.

Andy,
The KLR is a bargain bike with few (no?) frills, so you'll have to just
keep counting gears. It's pretty easy to know when you're in first, and
there's no shame or damage done trying to find a gear above fifth. I
still look for that phantom sixth gear from time to time.
