watch out for ebay seller "steelescycle"

Post by Dave Svoboda » Mon Mar 24, 2008 5:03 pm

Hi, I was looking on Ebay to buy a few moto bits, and was about to order something from an outfit called "steelescycle". They're a pretty big Ebay seller, but like some of the larger sellers, they seem to have a universal policy of retaliatory feedbacks--if someone gives them less than stellar feedback, they retaliate with the worst possible feedback, even if they were satisfied with the transaction. (I'd point out that a neutral feedback to someone with thousands of feedback means very little, but a negative feedback to a buyer with 20 or 30 means much more.) I emailed them a polite inquiry about the issue, asking them about their feedback policy. This is what they sent me back.
>Dear dsvo, > >yep, it's a tough world selling used motorcycle parts on ebay. the >thing to consider when evaluating feedback is the percentage of >negative to positive. 99.3% is an awsome number for any seller. >brick and mortar retail busineses will normally have up to 10% >dissatisfied customers. if an ebay store has less than that, they're >doing well. lots of inexperienced buyers leave neutral/negative >feedback. they don't know how to buy online, or the anonymity makes >them brave. our feedback is as honest as theirs. check further and >you'll see as much positive feedback from buyers who had their >issues resolved through our diligent communication. if you look at >the high dollar items, you'll see nothing but good feeback for us. >it's always the guy buying a $20 part that bitches the most. no >matter how much we work with them, they just want to complain. we've >been in business for 22 years. we don't really need advice. you have >73 feedback, and the last item you bought was $35. you may want to >get a little more experience before offering guidance to a 2702 >feedback seller with over $500,000 in sales. we're definitely an old >school motorcycle shop. we're men who don't take kindly to whiners. >never have. never will. > >- steelescycle
Needless to say, I'm not going to be ordering from them. I urge you all to consider this attitude, when buying from this outfit on Ebay, or if you happen to know where their "brick and mortar" is. Oh, and I normally wouldn't think of posting someone's private email to me for public consumption, but I make an exception because this is a business. - Dave Svoboda, Sandy Eggo [Non-text portions of this message have been removed]

Its pretty much " an eye for an eye" on ebay. you leave negative, you get negative back, despite if the seller is in the wrong. but you can always add a worse comment to feedback left to get em back . Regards, shawn a16 ohio

Dave, did you really ping an eBay seller to take exception to their 99.3% positive feedback rating? *Really*? Incredulous, RM

While I might somewhat, slightly, a little bit, maybe agree that the response from "steelecycle" might have been a little gruff, they were pretty much 99.3% correct. I would not have even thought about worrying buying from them. eBay considers anything above 98% great. I think this is just a case of an eBay newbee being upset because they just got bit in the arse because they did not know any better. I kind of noticed the newbee only posted the steelcycle response, and their side of the story, and not the details of what the problem really was. While I am stepping in to this post late, and don't know all of the particulars, I suspect the guy with the 73 feedback might want to take "steelcycle"s comments to heart. And even with their response, I would not hesitate to order from them. In fact, they sound like the kind of no-nonsense kind of guys. Heck, I think I will check eBay right now to see if there is anything I need... And no, I am no eBay beginner. I have 100% feedback of 628 Jeff A20 In a message dated 3/24/2008 4:00:41 P.M. The new eBay feedback rating policy starting in May will eliminate seller retaliatory feedback. For obvious reasons sellers don't like the proposed new system. Just another, band aid. Bob

Sellers don't like it because it gives leverage to buyers to do the same damn thing. Except the difference is sellers are usually established, whereas a lot of buyers are newbees that don't know anything or are just scamming or having fun screwing around. If a buyer pays with Paypal, all they have to do is cry to Paypal, and the money is returned, and the seller has to fight for it. There is zero risk for a buyer that pays with Paypal. But there is plenty of risk for the seller if the buyer is scamming, or says they never received the item, or says it was damaged. Sellers have little recourse if the buyer is a jerk. All buyer has to say is give me my money back (fair or not) or they leave negative feedback. And they will still keep the product, and still cry to Paypal, and get their money back. eBay is going down the wrong path on this one. Jeff A20 Jeff A20 In a message dated 3/25/2008 1:36:17 P.M. As long as you're replacing things, I'd recommend an alloy choke plunger: http://www.steadengineering.com/product.sc;jsessionid=B65F4BF8C6B760EF4A23B0C0A8BECF1E.qscstrfrnt01?categoryId=1&productId=2 The stock ones break VERY easily. - Dave Svoboda, Sandy Eggo
