valve adjustment data points

Post by Jeff Saline » Sat Mar 08, 2008 2:53 pm

Listers, I've been working on a project on my KLR and I'm getting near the finishing point. Since I currently have a lot of the parts around the top of the engine off I thought I'd check my valve clearances and adjust if needed before reassembling things. It's been 8,417 smiles since I last adjusted my valves. That was in spring of 2006 which doesn't say much for my KLR riding in the last two years. : ( Anyway, when I adjusted them my notes show I nailed the clearances at the maximum limit. I like the large size of the clearance since a valve clearance will tighten with wear. By starting at the large end I get a longer valve adjustment interval and my engine seems to really like it too. I use inch measurements since I find it easier than using metric. For the intake the clearance is 0.004"-0.008" . For the exhaust the clearance is 0.006"-0.010" . On today's check the clutch lever side intake valve was still at 0.008". The throttle side intake valve was at 0.007". Both exhaust valves had tightened up by 0.001" to a 0.009" clearance. Since changing a shim will change the clearance 0.002" there were no adjustments possible in this situation. Just a brief valve clearance history on this bike which I bought used in fall of 2003 with 1,482 smiles on it. I've done three valve clearance checks/adjustments now and the bike currently has 23,747 smiles on it. First valve check was 30 March 2004, 3,269 smiles. Both exhaust valves were at 0.004". The clutch lever side intake valve was a loose 0.004" and the throttle side intake valve was at 0.005". Second valve check was about 2 years later at 15,330 smiles. That's a 12,061 mile valve check interval. The clutch lever side exhaust valve was at 0.008" and the throttle side exhaust valve was at 0.005". Both intake valves were at 0.004". My records show all valves were adjusted to the maximum clearance. Third valve check, again about 2 years later at 23,747 smiles. This is an 8,417 mile valve check interval. Both exhaust valves were at 0.009". The clutch lever side intake valve was at 0.008" and the throttle side intake valve was at 0.007". So based on this info I suppose I'm good on a valve clearance check until maybe 35,000 smiles are on the bike. Just a data point for those of you wondering if it's important to check your valves on a new bike or a bike that's been bought used and has an unknown maintenance history. on i have a project KLR650 to build over the next month or so. and i have a few plans for it.. upgrading the spring for the rear shock headlight wiring running lights on the signals rewire the "park light" to become power for a kickstand siren(raise the kickstand and a siren goes off until the battery dies or you find the hidden switch) fused main power feeds for accessory's front and rear of bike fog lights and switch so what i want to know if if you all were doing this project what would you all be changing while you had the bike torn down to the frame. i know brake lines need to be done to braded lines but what else needs to be done all the plans i had and now i draw a blank. klr6502k

<><><><><><><><> <><><><><><><><> klr6502k, I'd consider the following listed in no particular order: - no-toil air filter - sintered brass fuel filter - DR650 foot pegs - headlight cut out switch cutting out the high beam - heated grips - dual star LED tail light - doohickey - clean the oil screen - magnetic drain plug - NAPA soft washer for drain plug part number 704-1371 - skid plate - radiator protection - bark busters - throttle lock - mirror vibration dampers - carb vent "tee" mod - swap the fuses to ATO type fuses - Thermo-Bob - gel grips maybe pro grip gel grips 714 or 737???? - change out sprockets and chain to 14/45 combo with 108 link chain carry a 16 tooth sprocket for longer paved trips - prevailing torque type axle nuts - headlight guard - handle bar risers Hope this gives you something to think about.
