diy offset bar risers

Post by Chris Norloff » Wed Mar 05, 2008 10:35 am

I'd tend to doubt there'd be extra damage in a crash due to the extension at the bar mounting. However, the square tubing looks a bit thin wall for my tastes, though, for something as critical as handlebar connections. In one photo it looks like the wall is already distorting under the force of the bolt. I've never forgotten a handlebar breaking off due to rust, many years ago on another bike. Most commercial risers just raise the handlebar mount, IIRC. I have an old set from a junk bike that position the handlebars just like you did; they're solid aluminum and never had a problem. best, Chris -----Original Message----- From: DSN_KLR650@yahoogroups.com [mailto:DSN_KLR650@yahoogroups.com] On Behalf Of rallyrabbit Sent: Tuesday, March 04, 2008 12:06 PM To: DSN_KLR650@yahoogroups.com Subject: [DSN_KLR650] DIY Offset Bar Risers Hello KLR Gurus: I have made a simple set of offset bar risers to move the bars on my KLR to a better position for standing (2" up and 2" forward) out of a cheap standard riser set and a few inches of spare square steel tubing. They put the bars in the perfect position, at least for me. What I am wondering about is what would happen in a crash (I tend to do that). I am thinking that the increased lateral forces exerted by the extensions might crack the triple clamp where the original bolts threaded in. Any thoughts? Any experience with commercially made offset risers? tank bag into a tail bag

Post by Jeff Saline » Wed Mar 05, 2008 2:26 pm

Listers, I recently purchased a Nelson Riggs CL-650 tank bag from www.newenough.com on closeout for $45.99. It was for my airhead 1979 R100RT. I got to thinking about it the other night as it's got a good size to it and appears well made. It's not waterproof but neither is my Wolfman Explorer tank bag. I don't think this tank bag would work well on a KLR fuel tank. Anyway, today as I was getting ready to leave the shop for lunch I remembered the tank bag and took the time to place it on the rear of the KLR to see how it fits. I put it on sideways and it looks like it will fit pretty well with maybe just a tad bit of overlap on each side. I'll have to make a harness for each side so it can be an easy on and off arrangement. I've been thinking I should reconsider some of my local riding habits as I don't take all the tools I'd probably like to have with me in the dirt. A tail bag should hold everything I need and then some too. I like having a dedicated bag for tools and supplies for the bike so I don't have to keep loading and unloading and transferring stuff between bikes. I figure with a dedicated bag I have a better chance of remembering everything I want to drag along. Just wanted to point out a fair deal with a very good company. Within 15 minutes of placing my order on line I received confirmation of the order and then a confirmation of shipping via Fed Ex. tank bag into a tail bag

I use one half of my Ortlieb saddlebag as a tail bag when I'm playing in the backcountry on a day ride. Perfect size, carries all my tools, lunch, first aid kit, matches etc. Waterproof as well.
