Big area; no simple answer. I'm a fan of Garmins. They have a great
line. It's hard to choose, though. One big decision is big or small.
The small ones, like the ETrex and GPSMap76 series fit in a pocket,
but have smaller screens and buttons. The mid-size are the V,
StreetPilot 3 and 176/c. they have much bigger screens, and some
color, some auto-routing, bigger buttons are easier to use at 75 mph
with gloves, etc, but will be over $400.

I strongly recommend getting one with mapping (most over $150 have it
at this point) as basic lat-lon is only useful with lots of paper
maps, and plan on buying some mapping software like Roads &
Recreation (about $90). The standard basemaps included in units tend
to be Interstates and major highways only. A good basic bike mount is
a RAM for under $40. The Touratechs are much better for about $90.
You may want a power cord.

Mapping requires uploadable memory on the GPS. My Etrex legend has 8
meg, and that holds about 80% of the Arizona(115,000 sq miles). I'm
thinking about buying another and will get a minimum of 24 meg. The
bigger units allow changeable memory cards of up to 128 meg; that's
the way to go for really big trips. The premier vendor is

www.cycoactive.com. They have lots of useful information. There are
 also discount vendors like
www.gpscity.com .
