Listers, OK Heads, Today I was at a point in my current project where I could put some color to some metal. I know, nothing too special here but I wanted to share about my discovery when paint shopping last week. Dupli-Color High Performance Wheel Coating in WP101 Silver is a pretty good match for the KLR silver frame parts. I think I learned this a few years ago reading the KLR650 FAQ. I've used the WP101 a few times with very nice results. Since my current project is kind of near and dear to me I didn't want to trust an old mostly used up rattle can that might spit and sputter when deployed. So I went shopping for a new can of paint. I seem to remember I bought the Dupli-Color product at WalMart maybe two years ago. It wasn't far out of the way for me so I stopped in to grab another can. I was surprised they didn't have the High Performance Wheel Coating paint. But what I did find I immediately grabbed. It was a rattle can of Dupli-Color Self-Etching Primer, DAP 1690. I got kind of excited at the prospect of being able to use self-etching primer from a rattle can. That saves a lot of work and cost versus the normal method of mixing it up and using a spray gun. Self-Etching primer is used on bare metal and in a couple of light coats. After about 30 minutes it'll be dry and you can sand (use 400 grit, wet) or top coated immediately. It really adheres well and is a great base for a top coat. Today when I used it I was very impressed. The nozzle is adjustable for spray pattern of vertical or horizontal or even angled. It sprays out in a fine mist and is very thin. Light coats are required or you'll have a nasty run that will have to be addressed. Dupli-Color suggests you apply the light coats about 2 minutes apart. I made sure the previous coat had flashed before shooting the next coat. I think this was the best rattle can product I've ever used. Well best next to cheap hair spray in a spud gun. : ) I was surprised as the mixing instructions say to shake it until the ball breaks loose in the can. That took about 30 seconds. I also shook it in the store to make sure it was loose. Took even longer the first time. Then the instructions tell you to hold the can by the top and swing the bottom in a circle for at least 2 minutes so the ball can travel in a groove in the can. Let me tell you two minutes is a long time to shake a can of paint by hand. This primer really travels well so make sure you mask the area to prevent a nasty clean up problem later. This primer is a light green so you can easily see where it's applied. It's suggested you wait 30 minutes but I didn't feel like watching paint dry so I got out the heat gun and using it at about 200 degrees F I warmed the painted area a bit. The self-etching primer was dry to the touch in about 15 minutes. So I top coated it with the Dupli-Color High Performance wheel paint in silver. I shook that can like the normal for one minute. Then just for the heck of it I did the circle ball rolling move for maybe 30 seconds. I don't know if it made a difference but I do know it didn't hurt anything. The silver will run very easily if the can is too close to the item being painted. Or if you make too slow of a pass or overlap too much. You also need to shake the can every minute to keep the paint fully mixed. It's suggested you do two light coats and then a medium coat to help prevent runs. I let each coat flash before the next coat was applied. Well, just wanted to share with you about the self-etching primer. It worked well for me and I'm gonna keep a can on the paint shelf so I don't have an excuse for not using it. I'm still waiting for a diamond pattern king queen seat to arrive. It's not a Corbin. : ) OK, not really. I'm just doing a bit of cooling system maintenance and wanted to freshen up a few bits of the frame where the paint was gone. I'm also getting ready to install headlight relays to improve my lighting. Oh, and a heat troller dual controller for my heated grips. I'll post more once I'm pretty well done with this project.
